1. The subject of our group project is to find if there are correlations between pollution and education, health, and income levels in the U.S. We believe that pollution will have a negative effect on those factors, and we will analyze appropriate data to see if that is either correct or not.
2. Members of our group:

The most important takeaway from this course is how to best represent data to the data consumer. Whether that be infographics, data visualizations, or dashboards, certain information needs to be displayed in a specific way to make it easier for the data consumer to understand what the original data meant. For an incoming student, I would say that…[Read more]

A data driven service that I use often is Netflix. The rows would be the level of interest I have in the content (i.e. how likely it is that I would watch it). the columns would then be the genre, sub-genre, the movie, the director, and the actors.

The article that I read was called, “Executives still mistrust insights from data and analytics,” and it pointed out that only 10 percent of executives feel like they truly excel at creating a quality analytics team. The article points out that “lack of trust” that comes from using data analytics for decision making instead of intuition starts at…[Read more]

An example of a KPI that I used on a daily basis is the amount of hours slept per night. This is specific and measurable because I use my Apple Watch to calculate the amount of time I sleep and am awake during the night. It is achievable because I can go to bed earlier or drink less caffeine later in the day to get better sleep. Its relevant…[Read more]

Yes, I’ve made several of the stupid data corruption tricks. The worst one I have made is the putting values into cells that have formulas or are pointers to other cells. Usually, I’m play around with the numbers and just want to see how changing it to a different number may affect the outcome, and change it back when I’m done. However, I forgot…[Read more]

The article that I found interesting delved into the benefits of extracting data from the human genome to find patterns that help explain what causes certain viruses. In particular, this article looked at two major viruses that have plagued our population over the last few years, such as Zika and Ebola. This case interviews Pardis Sabeti, who is a…[Read more]

In Hoeven’s “Stephen Few on Data Visualization: 8 Core Principles,” simplifying is the most important. If the end user doesn’t understand what they are looking at, or what is meaningful about the data, the visualization has very little purpose. I believe if all of the other principles are satisfied, simplifying will come with greater ease.

The most important take away from last week’s discussion on biases and the signal problem is that data can be skewed by the creator. This can happen when the creator goes in to analyze data with a preconceived idea of how something should be, so they try to fit the data to their hypothesis. Or, the creator find data that looks so correlated that i…[Read more]

Today, algorithms are used online to sift through data and categorize people due to their incredible efficiency. Rana Foroohar, from Time Magazine, says that Big Data is causing a “Silent Financial Crisis.” Her reasoning is that people are often found on the wrong side of a certain algorithm, such as “ranking [a teacher’s] performance,” or “a…[Read more]

A statement that many people claim is that vitamin C supplementation will prevent you from catching the common cold. To test this, I would have multiple groups, including a blind test group, and have them take a certain amount of vitamin C each day. When a person comes down with the cold, we will document how long they have the symptoms for. After…[Read more]
