I think the important thing to know with Toyota is that they are an unbelievably streamlined process-oriented company from which others try to replicate. Because of their lean processes, they are able to implement technology more effectively than others. It is part of their culture and they have always been an industry leader. The amount of data alone in manufacturing mandates the requirement for IS in the automotive industry. Whether it is through automation or process improvement, IS is a major component in everything Toyota does, and why they have set the bar in many areas.
Information systems can have huge benefit to a manufacturing company like Toyota. I can see them connecting their manufacturing machines to their computer systems which will allow the parts to be counted and if more is required the system will automatically order more of that part.
Thanks, Cecilia – I am a huge Toyota fan – it is interesting to see what they are doing to stay on the cutting edge with their information systems
