A data driven site I use is Gmail. The rows in a spreadsheet would be something like the dates or times of each email, and the columns would be who I send each email to, or which groups I send my emails to. It would be a fairly straightforward spreadsheet as I do not send and receive that many emails.

This article has data visualizations that show which places in the US have more bars than grocery stores. I found it surprising that there are about 13% more grocery stores than bars, I expected there to be a lot more grocery stores than that. Some places, such as…[Read more]

A KPI I use regularly is my daily step goal on my fitbit. I aim to get at least 10000 per day. It is a very specific and measurable goal because the fitbit is fairly accurate in measuring my steps. It is achievable because I prefer walking places so my goal is fairly easy to hit. It is relevant because 10000 steps is the daily amount you are…[Read more]

To me making a backup is the most important aspect when working it excel. In high school I had to do a excel project in personal finance but I was not regularly saving my work. At one point I accidentally put in the wrong equation and it messed up all of my numbers. It was so messed up I had to start over. Now, whenever I do any project I make…[Read more]

This article looks at one of my favorite NBA players, Demarcus Cousins. He is one of the tallest players in the NBA, but he leads the league in times his shot is blocked in a game. He gets blocked 1.6 times per game, more than players like the 5′ 9″ Isiah Thomas or Kemba Walker.…[Read more]

I think “ask why” is the most important principle. Just pulling facts from the data is almost useless unless you really look into it and try to figure out why something is happening. Florence Nightindale didn’t just look at the data she collected, she wanted to figure out what the data meant and how she could help the world with her findings. If…[Read more]

This series of charts and graphs is on Christmas movies. The first series of bar graphs is on pain level of saying different words with “FUDGE” being the most painful word to say. There is another bar graph below that that gives your chances of putting your tongue on a pole when someone says…[Read more]

https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/what-it-takes-to-truly-delete-data/
This article talks about how hard it is to truly delete data. I eventually want to go into cyber security so this article was very interesting to me. A lot of our data is now stored in the cloud and the problem with that is, unlike hard drives, you do not have full control…[Read more]

An example of conventional wisdom is that diets where the participants cut out fats are the best and most effective form of dieting. The general consensus for the last 40 years has been that fats are the worst thing for you to eat. Recently more people have been trying low carb diets and are having dramatically better results. There have been…[Read more]
