As I said before, I am a marketing major. Marketing relies on clear, efficient, updated, good data constantly! It is important for everyone in the business to have a clear vision of what the market is doing on a daily basis, and an integrated system would provide that. Marketing of specific brands rely on good information about the targeted consumers. If they are using bad data, the brand could be marketed to the wrong customers and severely impact the business. If marketing targets the right consumers, based on reliable information, a company’s revenue would increase. Fluctuations in market data impact a marketing campaign’s direction and individual’s roles within the company, and they need up to date, good data. Everyone needs to be on the same page when creating a brand!
-
Marketing relies heavily on consumer, market, and competitor data so it is extremely important to have an integrated system for users to access, find, and share information. Markets and trends also fluctuate and change so it is important that companies have the proper up-to-date information they need to make decisions that will benefit their business. If a company is using bad data their marketing plan could be led in the wrong direction and they will ultimately fail to meet their marketing goals.
-
I am a business management major and I would like to get into sales management. Having correct data and being organized is very crucial in management because you are leading a team in performing a task. Management consists of the interlocking functions of creating corporate policy and organizing, planning, controlling, and directing an organization’s resources in order to achieve the objectives of that policy. If you as the leader has the wrong information, the whole team then has the wrong information, just like being organized. It is important to have an organized system so the customer is not confused which will hopefully result in the customer purchasing a product from your business.
-
Being an HR major bad data can have detrimental effects on my job. I have incorrect data about an employee, such as, their W-4 forms I would be making incorrect decisions. These decisions will affect things like how much they pay in taxes and other things like health insurance. Having good and accessible data would allow me to do my job efficiently and effectively.
-
Bad data would have an immense impact on my career as an entrepreneur. Using bad data as a basis for creating a product would result in a loss of huge money and time. In addition, using the bad data will lower an investor’s faith in my team or worst case scenario, we will never work together in future product. Using good data in effect will generate a far more effective product marketed to the right people.
-
I’m an Accounting Major and having a clear view of all of your data is crucial to you as the accountant, auditor, etc and to your client as well. Most clients care most about the big picture and that means having a clear, accurate, and well-put together snapshot of their books so they can find the information they are looking for. Any bad data or bad formatting of data analytics would result in messy, hard to read books that would take up large amounts of time to figure out and make any sense of.
-
In clinical research everything is data and collected data which means someone is running a report from it, making decisions from it so making sure the systems we use and the people uploading the data are knowledgeable is very important. If you are screening a patient for a study and a test results comes back high however it was recorded as normal, this will put the study at risk because the drug that is being tested will not have the correct values and it would put the patient at risk because they didn’t met the criteria of the protocol. Other data captured is money coming in to cover the costs of the study. If the revenue is recorded incorrectly then an expense may be paid assuming the money is available however it wasn’t.
-
I am a Risk Management Major. After graduation I plan on selling business insurance. In order to be successful at selling business insurance you have to know every facet of the business you want to insure. Without accurate data of the business, you will not be able to create policies that insure every aspect of that business. Data is absolutely imperative to the insurance industry.
-
As an HR and Accounting student in the 21st century it is hard to think during my birth year the internet was only around 3 years old. Data and computer systems are so vital in today’s business world that reading articles about what was predicted to come from the internet is baffling. Having a computer system that fits with your company and demographic can completely change an organization by allowing your team to complete tasks faster and more efficiently. I remember when I was a camp counselor and my first year at the camp it was my job to sign kids in in the morning. We did not have a computer system so we had kids divided by age. When administration finally got around to an online database of names allowing me to easily log kids in and out it made all of the difference in the world.
-
(New answer, I wrote for the wrong week 🙂 ) As a student with an accounting minor, who has not yet graduated or taken too many courses towards the major, it is easy to tell what a huge difference good data makes compared to bad data. When filling out any of my statements online, if even one percentage of data is incorrect it could potentially throw off my entire income statement, stockholders equity chart etc. Also as a intern for a virtual HR company, being able to easily locate and retrieve data regarding each client is not only vital but it is what my entire internship relies on.
-
-
Bad data would mean that business decisions I made would not be accurate. Thus, a companies’ investments, or choices they made would be based on incorrect data and the bottom line would be negatively impacted. With good data, the choices that are made are informed choices. In marketing, bad data would mean that the marketing would not be effective. When it comes to any industry, good data helps one to make an informed strategic choice without it the company is basing all of their decisions on misinformation.
-
My major is business administration, and for those of you that don’t know I handle all permits, land development and zoning requests for a municipality. In my job I handle many plans, permits, applications, and property files. Throughout the permits I collect specific pages that are used by the county for data collection to better assess home values. I also have to collect data for amount of traffic on specific roads, which again can go and reflect assessed home value. Within the municipality there are different departments that handle the money, which is a very specific task considering the municipality can be audited at anytime. They use data to show what money came in when and why and what residents we’re bad at paying their bills.
-
Data is a huge asset, even the smallest companies generate data . It impacts businesses in many different ways, and will affect a person regardless of their position in the company. I am majoring in Risk Management and Insurance. If I am going to go into this field after graduation, then good data would be imperative to my success.
-
I think that data is important in every major, since it gives you details on a variety of topics. As an Accounting Major it is obvious that numbers are crucial for the general ledger, payroll, audits, taxes and so forth. Bad data will obviously compromise the quality of my work and decrease my reputation as a professional.
-
Data is extremely important in every business and industry. Good data will make a daily job much easier and it will cause any given task to be finished quickly, precisely and more accurately. Bad data, however, will cause an everyday job to be done incorrectly and it will also cause the job to take much longer to be completed because the task may have to be restarted and corrected before it can be completed.
-
When I think about my major, which is Marketing and Real Estate, I know that data will be very important in my field. When looking at market trends in the real estate industry, it is important that you are collecting accurate data so that you make accurate conclusions about the market. Good data will help a business succeed, while bad data can make your credibility as a business go down.
-
I am currently enrolled as an MIS major, so the benefits of good and accurate data mirror those mentioned in class. As for my career right now, collecting accurate data is essential because it saves lives. I work in the IT department for a construction company in a refinery. Refining is a dangerous business, but collecting accurate data on pressures in pipes and torque amounts can minimize the risk of fires/explosions/general incidents. Collecting and recording “good data” is crucial making sure that the job can be completed safely and smoothly.
-
As a marketing major it is important to keep track of your clients and campaigns. Having the right data in accessible places is important so that we know which tactics are working. Without keeping track of our data, we may waste valuable time and resources trying out poor strategies.
-
My major is Business Administration. Marketing and advertising are the the fields upon which I care to concentrate. Having improper data could have an astoundingly negative impact on an organization. It costs more funds to gain new customers than to retain those already had. Bad data could lead to offending current clients and/or customers, not to mention also be unappealing to individuals seen as potential customers. That would injure the company’s bottom line of profits and could led to a PR nightmare. Therefore maintaining proper data makes sound business sense.
-
I am enrolled as a Finance major so any business I try to work for will need to collect good data and have integrated systems for data. I will definitely benefit from this knowledge of ERPs and Data Analytics because Finance deals with a lot of numbers and having the right data collected together will be almost essential.
-
I’m majoring in Marketing. I think having good data is very important for a marketer, it makes marketing more efficient. Good data can deliver insight into not just who your customers are, but where they are, what they want, how they want to be contacted and when. Good data can help you discover what influences customer loyalty and what keeps them coming back again and again. With good data, you can determine the optimal marketing spend across multiple channels, as well as continuously optimize marketing programs through testing, measurement, and analysis.

Realistically you can use decision trees in every aspect of life. Anytime that there is a decision process that is long or complex a decision tree would come in handy. An example would be if you work for a large company and are a supervisor. There might be a decision tree you can implement to help you navigate the “improvement process” between yourself and your superiors.
-
Honestly decision trees can be used to schedule your day. Examples could be as simple as if I have leftover milk, I’ll eat cereal for breakfast, if I have no milk left, I’ll just eat some eggs or planning according to the weather. By using decision trees to plan your day, you will end up wasting less time on making decisions on the spot and instead be using that extra time for something important or something for leisure.
-
Hi Kenny. That was a great example of using food and meal preparation as a subject for decision tress. I just realized that I have been implementing them prior to being aware of their name. For the week, the meals are mapped out depending upon what is available in the freezer, fridge and/or pantry. If I forgot to take something out of the freezer or got home later than expected then a more readily available option is on deck. And already accounted for, as I do periodically expect not all to go exactly according to plan, even meals.
-
-
This is a great example–curious to see how he would feel if he had to map it out himself :)!
-
Decision trees could be used for pretty much anything that involves making decisions. I’ve unknowingly been making decision trees in my head this whole semester. For example, if I don’t have class until later in the day I will work on some assignments that I have due and if I don’t have any assignments due I will run some errands. If I don’t have any errands to run I will go to the gym but if the weather is bad I’ll stay home and do stuff around the house. By mapping it out I am able to use my time more efficiently and prioritize what is more important for me to accomplish first.
-
I agree with everyone that decision trees can be used for pretty much everything. I use them the same way Lauren does all the time and for the same reason as Danielle!
This question is perfect for a situation I am dealing with right now. I have to figure out if I can go on a trip to Italy with my family in June. This is contingent on several factors including money, Temple tuition payments, my children, and the simple fact it is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Obviously one determinant is money. If I have the money, I can then move on to the next decision in the process. If not, it ends and I can’t go.
-
I think a decision tree would be really helpful for people looking to buy a home, especially for first-time home buyers. I bought my first home last year and there was definitely an overwhelming amount of options out there that led to so many different paths. A decision tree could help you narrow down your search with branches for location, commute time, property taxes, features, amenities, move-in ready and really any sort of part that mattered the most to you. It would be helpful to see how each choice led down to another path and could potentially help home buyers avoid a home that led to an undesirable consequence.
-
Raechel,
I agree a decision tree would be helpful when buying a house. You may even need to add if you need to sell the house you are in to acquire the one you are looking to buy. This would add, sell on your own or with a realtor, lowest price you could accept, how long would you need to move out of that house into a new one, moving costs, new appliances or take the ones you have. -
Congratulations on your first home purchase! That is a clever and crafty way to put decision trees to use.
-
I agree that a decision tree is great for large scale decisions! They are also helpful when you have so many options, like you did, for buying a home and so many items to take into consideration.
-
-
A decision tree would be helpful when someone is deciding to buy a car. It could sort out the amount of money available, the max amount you can afford to pay each month, lease or buy, new or used, trade your car in or sell it on your own, what type of car, the color, accessories needed, what dealership to go with, how much gas you will need in a month along with what insurance carrier is the best. These variables are all very important as this shows you the true cost of the car each month.
-
A decision tree can be helpful when going on a (blind) date, :D. You know nothing or little of the other party, and a decision tree can be your calculator of some possible answers. Is the other party talkative/ funny/interesting/ and so on. The answers will lead to the final decision of meeting again or declining the proposal.
-
I think decision trees could be helpful in saving me money while grocery shopping. My roommates and I often run up quite the bill while shopping and trying to cut back. By asking ourselves quick questions that run down a list that consist of stuff like “Will we all eat this?” “Will it go bad quickly?” and “Is it on sale?” I think we could save ourselves quite a bit of money. Especially by keeping us from creating food waste with spoils.
-
I think decision trees can be used for many different things. I could use one for something as simple as what I am going to do this weekend. It would layout my possible options, such as going out or doing homework. The decision tree would explicitly lay put the possible outcomes of the choices I make.
-
It could really help in production areas in any manufacturing to understand how goals of production match production. I would put all the data in a neat decision tree chart and see which part needs adjustment or improvement. Decision tree simplifies every point of process and shows where inefficient part is.
-
As other people have said using a decision tree to make a major purchase is an excellent idea. I also think that decision trees could be useful in education. For example, for upper level classes there can be a lot of prerequisites that must be completed. Therefore, when a student goes to register for a course a decision tree could be used. The yes or no questions could be has the student taken x course if yes then they are directed to the next course in the sequence if no then they have to take the course.
-
I could use a decision tree in the training of my horses. Depending on the weather, am I riding inside or outside? If he is competing that weekend, he needs to jump. If it is winter, he needs conditioning work. If he isn’t even going to pay attention, then he just needs to go for a walk and have a break. It would be helpful to take the guesswork and emotional interference out of training and make it more objective!
-
You can use decision trees in many areas of every day life. A family can make one when they are trying to decide to where to travel to. Teachers cab use them in their lesson plans. I think that they may be useful in cooking. Also in projects like home design/decor. Decision Trees make ideas flow easier.
-
My wife and I are going through the process of refurbishing our house. We sat down and created a decision tree to make the most informed decision. We visited numerous furniture stores and made decision trees for each one of them. This process reminded me of the old adage of making a pro and con list for everything. Decision trees are sort of new age pro and con list as they are very detailed and spell out the cause and effect.
-
A decision tree can be used for various aspects and theoretically anything you need to make a decision for. I think decision trees are logically when having to make a big picture decision and need logic to back those decisions. They can also be used for smaller scale issues such as What do I spend my Saturday morning doing? If its raining out maybe you take a course to a list of different options versus if it is sunny. Feelings and mood can also be an aspect of a decision tree.
-
I have come to the realization that both my girlfriend and I are horrible at coming up with ideas for going out on dates. One could use a decision tree to focus down or pinpoint what we both want to do. Not guaranteeing this would be full proof, may even lead to a branch saying “I don’t know” which is a common phrase of hers. However, having a decision tree can be an easy, and quick way to come up with a date or something to do. It could also be a way to not pinpoint what you both want to do, but more so as a way to be spontaneous. let the decision tree take you on an adventure by following the way you built it and saying yes or no to certain points in the tree.
-
A decision tree can be useful for navigating through a vast majority of situations. When faced with a large scale decision that can be very complex, a decision tree is useful for breaking down the various possible routes that take place in the decision making process. Decision trees are also useful for small scale, every day decisions. In conclusion, decision trees are very useful for guiding yourself through almost any process where you are forced to make a decision.
-
Using decision trees can be very beneficial any time someone or something is faced with multiple decisions. I could use a decision tree when delivering food for my job. One way to do this would be when faced with multiple deliveries. I would analyze the time of the delivery, whether they tipped me or not, and how far it is. All these factors could be broken down into a decision tree and be very useful for me.
-
I think that decision trees can be especially helpful as a student going throughout everyday life. For example, while planning out my schedule for next semester there are so many things I have to factor in. Will I have time to keep volunteering, and if so for how long would I be able to do it? Decision trees could also be helpful in group projects so that as a group it would be easier to narrow down what to focus on.
-
I very much enjoyed learning about the concept of decision trees. These innovative designs can be used by everyone from students to business executives. My best thought for when to use a decision tree is following my study abroad process, from picking coed apartments, destination, institution and class selection. Using the decision tree in this concept can help me easily track the path I took while trying to study abroad.
-
Decision trees help make businesses and organizations ultimately reach their goals. The process of constructing a decision tree can also be very beneficial to those who needs to overview their operations and singling decisions. I place that I could see a decision tree being helpful is making one for my job and how I run my day. Creating different scenarios to my day and the choices I make, I can see what I could/can accomplish based on my decisions. Creating a decision tree can help me organize my day and identify a projected outcome I would like to achieve. One downside to using a decision tree with planning your day is if you have a complicated job or a job with a large amount of tasks, the chart can get over complicated and will loose its purpose.
-
A decision tree can be used in almost every decision that needs to be made. They are most useful, however, when a decision has a lot of factors in it. An example of this may be when buying a house or some sort of property. You must make decisions based on price, location, size, etc.
-
I use decision trees when being time conscious. When I’m getting ready in the morning and have to hurry or decide what I should do when. i unconsciously map out decisions and their effects. For more complicated decision making, I usually do pros and cons, but this adds another level of depth to the mapping out of effects and the impact one decision has on another..
-
I think decision trees can be used and be very helpful in so many different aspects of life. Where I would suggest using one would be in big life decisions. For example, choosing a college, or a place to live, etc. They give you a good grasp of what the outcome would be for each decision that you make. When I may decision I rarely every write things down or draw a decision tree, but I try to weigh pros and cons in my head, which I think is similar to the decision tree model.
-
I could see decision trees helping me plan out my week. A lot of times I have to decide whether or not to schedule clients on certain days. If I have tests or quizzes then I won’t schedule on that day. The decision tree would help me decide what to do with my time.
-
Decision trees are very helpful in making daily decisions. They provide a highly effective structure within which you can lay out options and investigate the possible outcomes of choosing those options. They also help you to form a balanced picture of the risks and rewards associated with each possible course of action. Decision trees are an excellent way of breaking down a highly complex decision problem into a series of simpler ones.

There are two things in the business world that have made my job much easier, one is electronic signature. With the clinical trial contracts, there are 3 signatures required at a minimum. This meant it had to be fed ex out to the sponsor, it was returned the same way, then it had to be taken to legal for signature then walked to the principal investigator for her/his signature. Fast forward to today, 11/28/17, this same contract is uploaded into a Temple system for signature, then email to the PI for signature then emailed to the sponsor for signature. It is then stored electronically, no paper file is kept.
The other is scanning vs the old fax machine. Scanners are so inexpensive so everyone can have one at their desk. No more running the pages through the xerox machine, waiting for a confirmation.
Danielle, while I’m not a gamer my sons are and I agree this is very interesting.
I would have to say that the most disruptive innovations in the past few years were in the way that we pay. Everything from Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, Android Pay, and even the chip readers. Working in the retail world we had to go through a massive overhaul of all of our EFT systems due to this new technology. The integration of mobile payments on “wearables” have also changed what we carry, not many people need wallets anymore. Also the introduction of things like Venmo are greatly decreasing the need for cash. All of these are steps towards a cashless society which will continue to change the way we shop and how retail establishments operate.
You make a few valid points. In total agreeance with the fact that we are headed into a cashless society. Unfortunately I have had my identity compromised. That trend will continue to increase as technology is more more heavily relied upon. These systems are coded by people therefore making those able to bypass systems more valuable.
I am right there with you! I had my debit card information stolen and am always sceptical of using any card on websites or in stores.
In my opinion, I think the most interesting disruptive innovation in the past few years is the implementation of robots. I remember when I was a kid, robots were on cartoons and in movies, the closest thing to a real robot for me was building an automatic car to battle against other cars with. I never imagined that I would be around to experience robots simulating humans. The implementation of robots opens up so many possibilities and at the same time closes so many job openings for real humans. After we discussed the interview with the female robot, I went and looked it up and I was in complete shock, I thought robots would only be able to complete simple tasks, but with her capabilities… she can do a lot more than simple tasks.
I believe that the development of apps is a massive innovation, specifically apps for ordering food or using reward programs. I work at Zoe’s Kitchen and since releasing an app, our entire business model has changed. A large majority of our orders come from the app and in turn that decreases the amount of people waiting in line and eating in house. This means we do not need to schedule as many Front of House employees. This app has made our company more effective and efficient in getting a customer their food quickly without sacrificing hospitality and quality.
From a retail associate perspective I think Apple Pay, other mobile payment apps, and wearables such as the Apple Watch is one of the most disruptive innovations in recent years. With every week that passes at work I notice more and more people are choosing Apple Pay as their form of payment during checkout. This newly desired form of payment required my store to implement new technology and systems that were compatible with and accepted Apple Pay. Despite being a millennial that grew up with technology and can adapt quite easily compared to older generations, I’m still kind of amazed whenever a customer simply taps their smart watch to the pin pad to pay for their order. I think this innovation will completely change the way consumers shop and buy products and how they interact with businesses in the future.
I feel like having online forums is the most valuable change since the Internet arrived. It allows people to do market research and get a better understanding of people especially in forums that aren’t very heavily moderated. Listening to people give their opinions and stories anonymously online give people some valuable insight, and forums usually cater towards one niche or group that you are focusing on. It’s never been easier to get inside of client’s heads and see what their problems are so that we can come up with ways to solve it and market it towards them.
I am not sure if this counts but I would have to say social media. It really changed how people find out about products and what business are doing. With social media, consumers are able to stay in the know. Businesses are able to advertise to people they never thought of before. They are able to reach a much bigger audience. Consumers are able to give input to businesses on their social media pages. It made being able to communicate easier.
Social media definitely counts! Look at all of the industries and information that was born out of social media.
I think the most innovative and interesting development in technology is apps for mobile devices. For me specially using a banking app has changed my life drastically. If i’m out and need to switch money between accounts, I simply logon to my bank of america account and the process is done in a matter of seconds. Years ago I would have had to find a computer to do that, and who knows if the process would have been that quick. We can do almost anything utilizing apps, from banking, shopping, sending money (venmo) creating documents, ordering food, playing games, creating designs, and recording music.
I agree Youtube has become a staple in our generation for technology use. If you don’t know how to do something you can just “watch a Youtube’. From reviews and how-to’s it has definitely changed the way we use the internet.
I think the most innovative and interesting development in the past years would have to be a two things. One would be a 3D printer. It’s amazing to me how much a printer can be of use especially since prosthetic organs can be 3D printed and implemented without any issue. It’s still a little bit expensive, but eventually if improvements keep happening, 3D printers will be pretty cheap and commercially viable for businesses in various fields such as construction to medical. Second would have to be a video streaming service/sites such as YouTube and Netflix. Reason being, w used to have to own a dvd/rcr player on disc and tapes that we would either purchase, rent or borrow. This by itself wastes a lot of time. Now that videos are online, all we need is internet and we are good to go.
The biggest innovation in the past few years would be the mobile phone, and, most recently, the implementation of the touch screen. Mobile smartphones have completely changed so many industries, creating and destroying. Operators and telephone books are a thing of the past. Social media has thrived under the mobile market and a majority of apps are only available on touch screen mobiles, such as Snapchat and Instagram. The phone has become so much more than just communication because of this innovation. It has become more than just a tool, but an extension of its owner.
This may be odd to say for a MIS course but I find technology to be the most important innovation to the original business model. As a child of the 80’s, we, as children, looked to television to tell us to tell our parents what to purchase us for the upcoming holiday season. When watching TV, I hardly ever see toy commercials. It seems that that days of ‘Mad Men’ type advertising agencies are gone. Toys “R” Us was founded in 1957. And has filed for bankruptcy protection in Sept of this year.
I asked my son how he knows what toys/video games he wants. He told me that he gains interest by viewing youtube gamers and if he finds the games to be cool then he’ll ask for it. Technology has created a different model for marketing that has prevailed a decade or two ago.
In my opinion, the most interesting innovation has been the commercial use of drones. Delivering packages within minutes from the online order will certainly increase customer satisfaction and sales. At the same time, mail carriers will face tougher competition and a need to adapt to this evolution. There will be a decline of employed delivery drivers and mailmen, but also an increase on warehouse employers and drone technicians.
I think that the use of drones for photo taking purposes has been very useful, especially in Commercial Real estate. During my internship I saw first hand how the marketing head used pictures taken by drones to enhance the portfolio of the property. Allowing prospective buyers to see what a property looks like from a birds eye view, can increase the properties value by showing all it has to offers.
In recent years, and even past years, everyone is fascinated with fast, and efficient. With online shopping growing everyday it is no shock that companies are looking for different ways to make deliveries, at an extremely fast rate. Now, this may seem like something that has always been present, but it is evolving at a rapid rate. We know have the capability to have food delivered to us in minutes. We can now get same day delivery for certain items. All of this comes with the evolution of technology and the increase in accessibility of the technology. Lastly, the competition amongst companies is driving the companies to find the best ways to beat their opponent. This is all great for us, the consumer, because it means we are able to get important and essential items at a faster more efficient pace.
In my opinion, the two most useful innovations, that I use frequently, are Uber/Lyft and apps that allow us to pay for things. I use Uber around four times a week, and I find it very convenient and inexpensive. Uber has changed the taxi industry, causing some cities to try and ban Uber. Also, payment apps have changed the way people “carry” money. The majority of my friends say, “Venmo me,” instead of giving them the money. Venmo is very useful, and allows people to be able to eliminate the need to carry cash at all times.
I think the most interesting innovation is the increasing use of robots. Robots have made it easier to do jobs that are either too difficult or too dangerous for humans. They have also helped humans make scientific breakthroughs. For example, we now have so much information on places humans cannot go to such as the surface of Mars and the deepest points of the oceans. However, as the technology used in robots continues to improve, the demand for a human workforce is beginning to decline in some industries.
As I mentioned in class this week, I think the one of the most interesting innovations in the last few years is everyone’s fascination with robots and how one day very soon they will do and seem more human like. While I am an adult with teenage kids, I can vividly remember how not to long ago I felt robots and self driving cars are a ‘thing” of the future and they fact that “that future” seemed so far away. And now that future is here and it just seems weird. We’ve gotten away from doing things with our own two hands and the era of mechanical features doing it for us is present day.
Present day business models are all much more electronic, paperless, and even human-less at times. Machines and robots have replaced many jobs today. While I am all for technology and its use, I am an old soul at heart and still wish their was a better balance of the two vs one taking over the other.
I think, the most interesting innovation was cloud. Just think of the implications! Businesses were connected throughout the world, everything could be done in real time. It is both a threat and possibilities. Threat because there’s no privacy left, everything is open whether it is put on internet or not. Possibilities are endless because cloud basically destroys borders and everyone is closer than ever to each other.
Honestly I think one of the most overlooked disruptive innovations is the invention of Uber. Taxi companies were absolutely gutted when Uber started gaining traction. So much so even that it was banned in Philadelphia because the PPA couldn’t compete! You can summon a (relatively) safe ride to any location at any time of the day and go anywhere (within reason). Taxis/Ride sharing services have never been more convenient or competitive.
Self driving cars are a new technology currently being tested in various countries. I think this will prove to be one of the most significant technological disruptions of our time. This will reinvent transportation and I believe it will be more beneficial than harmful.
I think one of the most important disruptive innovations of the past few years is Netflix or online streaming. Online streaming disrupted several different markets included movie theaters and DVD stores. This innovation completely changed how the consumer views movies. It has put blockbuster out if business and movie theaters could be next if they do not change.
I agree with others who have argued that the mobile internet is the most disruptive innovation. Being able to carry internet access in one’s pocket to complete payments, use GPS, connect with others, shop, bank etc has changed how people interact with the world. Ultimately, mobile technology and the mobile internet have changed how people live their daily lives which for me is the reason why they have been so disruptive. For businesses, the ease of access to information has meant that consumers can compare prices while they shop at bricks and motor stores, access product information, and customer reviews. Therefore, the mobile internet has made retail locations have increased competition and innovate ways to compete. In other ways, mobile internet has created an expectation that people are always connected. Bosses, and clients both expect that emails are responded to quickly and there has been an increasing blur between work and home life.
Danielle-I agree! My nephew plays games on VR that I wish I played when I was his age.
Kelly, this is an excellent observation.
