Definitely agree that while new technology can provide many benefits, it can also cause many issues if proper consideration is not given to the impact. Even the technology is understood by every employee, it may still impact other technologies, some impacts known and others not. Consideration towards impact needs to be considerable.

Definitely an interesting question about the definition of deep/detailed knowledge. While many may agree on a broad definition, many will have a different idea of what it actually includes. Some subjects may require very specific specializing, thereby narrowing an employees purview and limiting knowledge to a specific area. While others might…[Read more]

Had similar experiences relating to automation. Millennials are used to technology playing a large role in day to day life, while older employees may not be. May seem natural to millennials to try and automate tasks, especially those that are rote time consuming, where an older employee may not feel comfortable changing the status quo.

I do not believe that the two are mutually exclusive, and to some extent it is not possible to have one without the other. Part of depth of knowledge, is it the potential impact. And it is not possible to understand the potential impact without knowledge of the technology. If I had to choose one it would be technology knowledge because the impact…[Read more]

As most others have noted, the greatest impact millennials will have is technology. One of the first generations to be “digital natives,” growing up with technology and therefore a high comfort level. During one of my internships as an undergrad I remember the company starting to use what they were calling “reverse mentoring.” This idea was that…[Read more]

From my experience I would have the say the faker is the worst type of auditor. No one knows everything, and everyone has their limitations. I’ve always felt it’s important understand that “you don’t know what you don’t know”. Without this mindset, it is difficult to learn from past mistakes or new things. In addition, people will assume what this…[Read more]

Definitely agree that stress can cause many environmental issues. It can be corrosive and in a way contagious. There many times that I can remember simply being around a person projecting stress increased mine. Important to project a sense of calm, as opposed to needlessly creating a stressful environment.

Definitely agree about both complimenting one another. The innovation example relating to iPhone applications is apt. Mobile applications are relatively new and already impacting many enterprises. So both a technical knowledge and impact understanding is essential to realizing the benefits.

Definitely agree that the impact consideration should be extended beyond the business to future considerations as the technology evolves. As innovation evolves, the technology in question may also in addition to other technologies also evolving. Nothing is static, and cannot be considered in a frozen state.

Definitely agree that guidance from senior employees is crucial. Their experience is very relevant, and something that millennials cannot match. While the technical knowledge may exist, only part of the equation and guidance is an important component.

Definitely agree about the benefits and drawbacks to technology. I’ve seen people try and automate and use technology where simply forgoing that route would be quicker and easier. Almost similar to people using calculators to do very basic arithmatic, sometimes out of habit where simply mentally completing the task would be faster and accurate.

Definitely agree that fakers will not only harm their careers, but can hurt the auditing field’s reputation. There have been many times where I have stepped into a role where my initial experience was directly informed by those that preceded me. If they were positively received, than that initially extended to me, while the opposite was true. Bad…[Read more]

Security is definitely a vital issue going into the future. One weakness SAP has is that with every user on the system, the risk increases. Because the software is meant to be used across an enterprise, it works against the ERP in a way. In any scenario, more times something is done, or a group size increases, the risk always increases. So one…[Read more]

Definitely agree that government plays a large role in regulating compliance. Often industries look for the government establish standards which or may not be mandatory. Employee training is definitely crucial. However, many organizations conduct training, but do not have a culture to complement it. Proper training can educate and inform employees so they have the knowledge, but it’s not as useful without a culture that supports its goals. An employee may be well informed, but if it is clear the company doesn’t…[Read more]

Sometimes the compliance requirements mandating by governments can be in the company’s interest. In your example, if the company produces a drug with great benefits, but does not conduct thorough trials, it may find in later years of negative side effects. Which could ultimately harm its reputation and business. Determining if a drug is safe for…[Read more]

1. The ERP systems market is very competitive. What should SAP and other ERP systems providers be focusing on to make their systems more competitive in the future?

Always the risk of someone in an audit role to be viewed as the “bad guy” or not on the same team. Why it is always important to have good communication and try and work with the department or people to ensure the relationship is positive. There will always be issues, but proper communication can help to mitigate some the issues that can cause problems.

Agree with everything that you wrote. However, it seems like one of those things are great theoretically, but very difficult to achieve in practice. Auditors will need some relationships in order to execute their roles, as everyone does. Comes down to how those relationships are defined. Definitely should be separated from the work, but too much…[Read more]
