I thought this TED Talk was very interesting. In a world of increasingly fast and efficient technology, it’s no surprise that technology and machines will replace humans at some point. However, I don’t think it will be as soon as Martin Ford suggested in his talk, but I do think it’s important for us to start thinking now about the impacts of jobs…[Read more]

I think one of the most important takeaways from this course for me, personally, was that it greatly sparked my interest in MIS, so much so, in fact, that it made me want to declare a minor in MIS. Data Science is definitely important in everyday life, especially with all of the current data technologies. The course is about understanding data in…[Read more]

A data driven service that I regularly use is the music app Spotify. If I were to store the data for Spotify in a spreadsheet, the rows would be the song titles and some of the columns would be the overall genre of the song, the name of the artist(s), the album that the song is on, and the duration of the song.

A KPI that I use in my day to day life is the app “My Fitness Pal.” It’s a combination calorie measurement, step-tracking, and exercise-tracking app. It is specific and measurable because it measures steps, calorie intake, and exercise. It is achievable because I am able to change or alter my calorie intake and the number of steps I take each day…[Read more]

I haven’t made any of these mistakes because I haven’t extensively used Excel, but I think the most important mistake to avoid is number one. Accidentally saying “yes” to removing data from the server will result in not just data loss, but metadata and configurations. This also seems like a mistake that is very easy to make, because people tend to…[Read more]

I think the most important of visualizing data is “Attend.” If you want to create a data set that is relevant and understandable, besides needing simple tools, you’ll also need tools that help you to figure exactly which data is necessary to provide information. Stephen Few uses the example of the ball-passing and gorilla video, which demonstrates…[Read more]

What I took away from last week’s discussion on the signal problem and bias was that we must take the necessary steps to try to eliminate bias from datasets and to try to account for any signal problems with data before they happen. Whenever I plan to buy something online, no matter what it is, I always try to read the reviews thoroughly in order…[Read more]
