The most important takeaway I have from this class will be the in-class assignments we did on sentiment analysis. While I have taken classes on data analytics before and have used these skills in various projects and internships, I had never before heard of or worked with sentiment analysis. It was particularly cool to analyze Twitter data. I have…[Read more]

Stephen Few’s 8 core principles of data visualization bring up many important points. However, the single most important in my opinion is “Be Skeptical”. There is lots of data in the world, but this makes it very easy to tell a “data-driven” story any way you’d like. The methodologies behind “why” data says what it says are very important and is…[Read more]

Two industries come to mind when talking about big data defining the future. Those two industries are education and the healthcare. I think that free trade’s impact on American economic prosperity is a great example of conventional wisdom in our society. To many, free trade is viewed as bad because of it’s impact on American workers and American job loss. However, by leveraging data, it is entirely possible that we could prove that free trade’s “negative” impacts are actually…[Read more]

The two biggest takeaways that I have from this course are 1) a preliminary understanding of the data analysis workflow/cycle and 2) my understanding of the “data-speak” behind basic analytical tools such as R and SQL. While not an MIS major/minor, I am glad I took this class because so much is rooted in data now. I hope to work in government and…[Read more]

1) A possible real-world problem that could leverage the power of decision trees would be predicting the outcomes of high-risk youth in inner city schools. I know this isn’t necessarily business-related but I think that much of what we learn in this class can be applied to areas outside of business, which is why I like this class. For this…[Read more]

Another example of how you could use these joins to present and analyze data would be in many school districts. For many districts there are data tables related to school-/student-level academic performance (think… test scores, attendance metrics, English-as-a-Learning-Language (ELL) students, etc.); however, there are also data tables related…[Read more]
