Well put, Mustafa and an apt point that you highlighted – about DA programs failing. While the first few reasons you mentioned for lack of success are reasons for failure of any project not just a DA program, it is great that you brought it up. Here I’d also like to add that we all have seen firsthand that something as basic as data cleansing also…[Read more]

Great insight, Khawla ! Surprisingly, me and a few friends were just discussing about data visualization a few days back and I would have to agree with you that data visualization is a great way to put one’s point forth. It makes comparison and in turn decision making so much easier. For the same reason, infographics is great tool to make use of…[Read more]

Thanks for sharing this, Paul ! Despite watching the video, I still think it’s unbelievable that the Redteam Security guys were able to gain access into the premises and network with so much ease. Even in their first attempt where they tried social engineering, they were almost about to gain entry into the office just pretending to be from the…[Read more]

True, Yang Li. However its very easy to lose sight of something in the T&C or even point it out when once initially subscribes to some of the newsletters or subscriptions.. Sometimes T&Cs are not even clear when it comes to email id sharing so the above is just an easier way to keep a tab on where and how one’s email id is shared.

I’d like to share a gmail hack that very few people know about. This is a great way to find out which of your subscription provider has leaked your email id. When I asked many of my friends, none of them knew abo […]

It is common to hear people say “oh our generation was the golden generation, kids nowadays could never match up to our generation”. It’s human tendency to remember the good in the past and complain about the present. The same goes with the millennial generation often being expected to prove themselves, being given a hard time and being compa…[Read more]

There is a well-known myth or rumour about NASA spending millions of dollars of taxpayer money to develop a pen that would be able to write in zero gravity. While NASA tried to develop the pen with ink that wouldn’t freeze or evaporate and yet function in space. The Russians simply had their cosmonauts used pencils. The first time I heard that s…[Read more]

Personally I find the well-connected one to be the worst of the lot. There are high chances that not only would this one be undeserving or unfit for the role but he or she would probably throw their weight around too. While such a person might not contribute as well as the others do, they still might get an undeserved promotion. This in turn would…[Read more]

Rightly pointed out, Abhay. The sheer volume of data and the various channels through which data flows in coupled with the uncertainty of that data or source being unreliable makes it challenging for today’s businesses to completely rely on the data.
Only a few days back, I was reading this WSJ article…[Read more]

I was just reading an article the other day which was on similar lines – where data analytics fails not by virtue of itself but because the sampling is completely done wrong. The article mentioned that data analytics predicted a higher probability of crimes being perpetrated by specific races or ethnicity. The reality however, was that the data…[Read more]

Interesting post, Candace. While I found the article, the logic and the approach interesting, I’m still a bit skeptical and am curious to see some of the additional supporting analysis and how the Letter frequency fraud detection can be applied to real world business data.

Great list there, Deepali. I particularly liked that you pointed out decision making ability as one of the qualities that would help build a good reputation. While the auditing role may not really require big decision making, this is a great skill that would benefit just about anyone. One could look up to you when in a dilemma if they know that…[Read more]

That’s a great point, Abhay. You’re right when you say that to build a reputation you first have to have knowledge of your domain. One can have all the integrity and ethics in the world however if he doesn’t have knowledge, there is little that the integrity would add to your reputation. Basically, let your knowledge speak for itself. Also, I…[Read more]

Absolutely, Binu. A majority of the real world control failures occurred when management failed to set the right tone. As you rightly pointed out in the case of Satyam too this was very evident. When management tries to instill integrity and ethics and also promotes whistle-blower culture, employees tend to be more aware that their actions will…[Read more]

Thank you for sharing. That is interesting and useful indeed. However, the part about sharing your email address without permission may not be true. As we all know, whenever we sign up or register for something. There are always terms and condition that we agree to without reading. There may be something in the T&C that allows them to share your email address.
This is GREAT info. I will definitely begin utilizing the ‘+___________’ option when registering on sites. It will be interesting to see just how many companies are selling email info out there on the open market!
Thanks!
