For me, the faker is the worst type from auditee’s perspective. Honesty is a key ingredient to have integrity in the audit process to ensure its accuracy, truthfulness and completeness, and auditors are expected to give an unbiased and honest professional opinion, which must be based on an honest evaluation of the facts and circumstances. Any u…[Read more]

Python vs R, a general question for many beginners, but choosing the tools should never be the primary problem, what you want to handle with by using such a tool should be your first consideration. As you stated, you want to build your ability to code, I would also suggest Python. Python, being a more general-purpose language, is great for…[Read more]

Great post. I believe data analytics can be an incredibly powerful tool for auditors. Advances in data science can be applied to perform more effective audits. Audit data analytics methods can be used in audit planning and in procedures to identify and assess risk by analyzing data to identify patterns, correlations, and fluctuations from models.…[Read more]

Big data isn’t as useful as fast data
Some voices from this article say that decoding the myth of big data isn’t the most important part of analysis. Admittedly, “big data” is a buzzword we all swoon over. But […] -

Right now, big data is a good way to give your company an edge. However, finding ways to use that data can seem intimidating, especially to those small businesses. But most entrepreneurs should be trying to […]

These are good suggestions, but I think the problem for most small businesses when it comes to analyzing data is that they just don’t have the resources to deal with big data. In really small businesses, a few people might be handling all of the business tasks, so analyzing data would probably fall through the cracks.
I think that the advice they give, is good and that everyone should follow it.

Good point, Blake. And let’s not forget the cost associated with storing data. If they are storing it locally then costs associated with servers, networking equipment, power and cooling, etc. and if they are using a service like AWS or Azure, then the monthly subscription fee.

Nice post Priya, apart from what you mentioned, I believe that the adaptability is also one essential part of a successful fraud investigation. After making a plan, and then you make sure the plan is carried out. You will almost certainly have to change the plan as you go along. Perhaps an even better analogy is a military campaign, as in war,…[Read more]

I like your article Yu Ming. In light of the fact that attacks are increasingly evolved and sophisticated, the reality is there is no longer a one size fits all approach to security. To defend against the modern cyber threat, organizations need a multiple-faced approach, and not to fall into the trap of implementing one measure. Those automated…[Read more]

Very interesting article Ming, Trade-based money laundering is one of the most sophisticated methods of cleaning dirty money. Since you mentioned about invoicing for goods and services. Multiple invoicing is one of the most common method of TBML, which allows money launderers to receive multiple payments for the same product. I think ACL is one of the best way to look for TBML scheme because it allows us to look for duplicate or unusual transactions.

Thanks for this post!
In completing the lab this week I found it very interesting how ACL makes data analytics easier for the end user. If you work in IT for an extended period of time, you will experience numerous evolutions within technology. I can recall when relational databases became the ‘new’, ‘hot’ data structure in IT (in comparison to hierarchical DBs). SQL (Structured Query Language) was efficient and fast; and it provided users a means for retrieving data and reports for complex tasks. However, as data has become more complicated…and the amount of data has become enormous, there is now a need for more sophisticated tools. As database structures evolve (i.e. from relational to network databases)… tools to analyze data must also evolve. ACL appears to be the next stage in the ever-evolving cycle of information technology.

Ming,
I appreciate your post. Unless examples are stressed in the class material, may times students may overlook the power behind the tool.
ACL is an outstanding tool for using Data Analytics to pinpoint unusual behavior. As it evolves, I believe ACL will soon use Artificial Intelligence to identify unusual behavior, without a user having to write a script, code, or search for fraud. By using AI, the system will learn from past & present data changes to understand how the business process works, and if there are any strange things taking place.

Nice point Yu Ming. Automated controls do have many advantages over manual controls for improving efficiency, eliminating fraud or reducing costs of human resources. Nice point Binu. I agree with you that for monitoring and evaluation, it must be done manually. If a supervisor review and sign-off of a document, or bank reconciliation, or having an employee sign a privacy policy acknowledgement, it would be no meaningless if these done automatically, what worse it may provide opportunities for bad guys to commit fraud.
