The most important thing I took away from this course is that data is always present and it is imperative for people to look at it to better understand their business operations. It could be a slight oversight in the system or in the data that is costing your company hundreds of thousands of dollars. I would tell future students that this course…[Read more]

As a business student, a KPI that I use on a regular basis is stock prices. Stock prices definitely have SMART criteria. They are specific; they tell you how much money you need to buy one share of stock in a certain company. They are measurable: they are measured in dollars or other monetary units in other countries. They are achievable:…[Read more]

Though I have made mistakes using excel before, I cannot clearly recall a time where I made any of these ten mistakes. However, I would think that the one that is most important to avoid would be mistake number 5: using a deduping tool with “loose” criteria. For most of the mistakes listed in this sheet, it seems that making that mistake can be…[Read more]

The principle that I believe is most important is being skeptical. It is very possible to come across data that looks convincing but was obtained from an unreliable source. Using unreliable or incorrect data can lead to false information being spread which can be damaging. It is important that people are aware of the information they are being…[Read more]

The biggest take-away for me from Maurice’s talk is how using data that is readily available can massively improve your business. For instance, he discussed how while at QVC they realized that people became less interested in purchasing a product after 5 minutes of air time and so they shouldn’t spend 10 minutes advertising one product. Just a…[Read more]

A conventional wisdom statement that relates to sports is; “Defense wins championships”. This can be tested quite easily by comparing the defensive stats of the team that wins the championship in a given year and compare it to the league average in that year. Certain defensive stats I would analyze would be points allowed per game and then other…[Read more]
