If you were in charge of open innovation at Siemens, what metrics would you use to measure your success? I agree with everyone as posted above. The metrics should include key performance indicators (KPIs), cost performance index, Breakeven point, and product life cycle. However, since it is innovation, there are sunk cost for unsuccessful trial, a…[Read more]

Hi, Mori, I agree with you that loss control and loss margin both played role in the battle of digital media and record labels. In addition, once artists and bands are familiar with digital techniques, the record label will loss their contracted artists and bands, they then will definitely loss their market and profits.

The advantage of digital media are including fast turnaround, larger pool of audience and artists, no boundary of country, no ship cost, no inventory cost, therefore, cost effective especially price bid, and time sensitive with unlimited access, and no need of long term contract with artists and so on. The labels resistant to digital media are…[Read more]

Hi, Steve, I agree with you and like your Friday and Monday theory. I think the disruptive change are transient, and it does provide a significant opportunity to new business and transformation of old business models. The only failure be rooted in innovation that I can see is resistant to change or accustom to new routine.

Reading books is one of my favorites. I do not think the age of agents and publishers are dead. Along with the innovation of surfing online and eBooks, no doubt the paper copy or print was hit hard initially, but it survived and stays steady recently. I watched one TV show several months ago, which filmed the changes occurred at a small book store…[Read more]

Hi, Aldo, very interesting post, I can feel the society have helped so many robotic surgeons as you discussed here. The liver transplant surgery require lots of fine operations in a very limited space with lots of important organs nearby. The online forum and knowledge sharing as well as site visiting are offered through your society really work…[Read more]

As healthcare workers, we have been invited to join so many different groups, communities of our practice since we were students. I became a member of American College of Physicians when I was a medical resident. I was enrolled by my residency program initially, but I benefit from it significantly since then and it is a good investment in the…[Read more]

Hi, Dan, very good summary on pros and cons. I especially like the idea that “Amazon could offer discounts to high volume users to keep them from walking away from AWS when they grow larger and require more bandwidth”. I do not know how AWS make money from the service that they have provided to all users, but they have been making great profit as…[Read more]

Mariya, very good points. Indeed, globalization could save resources to strength R&D, as we always thought globalization meant more money invested for a bigger operation. I completely agree with you that IT have become more involved in the operation of the business, not even in global companies, it is no longer a service or support department.

I do not think Wyeth is a global company initially. It is a multination company with very loose association among affiliates. It is their IT department playing pivotal role in their globalization transition. IT are generally seen as a service operation, it is very difficult for employees and management team to accept the idea of change IT as a…[Read more]

BOYD is a very interesting topic. I have worked in healthcare industry and HIPAA always comes first. Amanda,
You made excellent point. I agree with you. I have worked with government agency before, their computers are so out of date and slow, it drove users crazy. For security reasons, they never ever allow employee to use their own devices or allow them to access it remotely from home computers, which is a standard operation for majority…[Read more]

Cloud has become so popular in modern technology, every person probably has her or his own interpretation. For me, it simply means store and access your data remotely somewhere on the web, a place where the physical existence is not clear for end users, but the end users can access it 24/7. The cloud facilitate all our computing in a way that have…[Read more]

After read all the posts above, it is difficult to write something new. Corey, you made very good points. It is very common whenever we had a very tight budget, the less expensive projects get approval much faster than those prioritized projects. I do not think the allocation of any fund are really fair, only based on its merit, even in our daily living.
