Temple AIS wins 2013 Student Chapter of the Year

aissliderThe Association for Information Systems (AIS) has named Temple AIS Chapter of the Year, the highest honor any student chapter can receive. And it’s not just for the glory, either: with this distinction comes $1,000 in grant money, allocated for 2013 student initiatives.

Temple’s first place win follows three years of having been named runner-up as Outstanding Chapter, and reflects incredible dedication from its student members. A committee of faculty and students oversaw this year’s rigorous selection process, poring over annual reports to find the chapter with the most “exceptional, well-rounded, and organized program,” notes AIS.

We have continued our legacy of offering our members the best in professional development and networking opportunities. Each one of my twenty officers has been working like crazy to make sure we pull all of this off seamlessly. It is a pretty awesome group of students. We have the most intelligent and creative students in the Fox School.

Founded in 1994, AIS is the world’s premier organization for academics specializing in Information Systems. The Chapter of the Year recipient must “lead the research, teaching, practice, and study of information systems worldwide,” says the organization.

As its 2013 title indicates, Temple AIS set benchmarks for other chapters, fostering an environment in which its members could thrive in the field of IS and as a cohesive community. Chapter President Joshua Wise attributes much of his chapter’s success to the group’s unique personality and culture of “entrepreneurial spirit” — comprising a buoyant blend of teamwork, fun, and (friendly) competition. “We like to challenge each other and find new ways of doing things,” notes Wise.

Among the chapter’s banner accomplishments and offerings in 2012-2013:

  • Top placement in every category entered at last year’s 2013 AIS Competition, hosted by Walmart in Bentonville, Arizona (Two 1st place finishes; one 2nd and one 3rd place ranking)
  • $5,000 in prize money invested in the Patriot Fund
  • Over 175 members, and a spike in meeting attendance (tracked via an attendance program coded by AIS officers)
  • Professional development and networking events with speakers from Comcast, NBC Universal, Cigna, Ernst and Young, AstraZeneca, and J.P. Morgan
  • Workshops every Friday and Saturday featuring technical training intensives
  • Well attended social events and community service initiatives, including $800 raised for CHOP and computer repair for non-profits

Fox AIS student chapter earns top honors in global contest

AIS wins competition May 2012Fifteen students from the Fox School’s Association for Information Systems (AIS) student chapter recently traveled to Provo, Utah, where they participated in the first-ever international AIS student chapter competition and earned first or second place in each of the categories they entered. The event included approximately 150 participants from 24 schools.

AIS is the premier global organization for information systems. The Fox School’s AIS chapter was the first student chapter in the world and was named a 2010 and 2011 Outstanding Chapter. This April, four teams of students advanced to the AIS competition finals in three categories: Mobile App, IT Video and IT Risk. Three of the four teams came out on top and earned international recognition with first- and second-place wins during the annual AIS student leadership conference.

Fox’s Mobile App team, which developed Sutify – an app to manage users’ professional wardrobes – and the IT Video team, which produced a video promoting IT as a career choice, won first place in their respective categories. One of the two IT Risk teams won second place in the IT Risk category for a detailed case study.

In addition to making it to the finals in Utah and winning first and second place in their target categories, Temple’s AIS students also presented at two sessions during the conference, held in conjunction with the competition. One of the presenters was Michelle Dy-Reyes, outgoing president of Temple AIS.

The recent AIS student chapter competition awards were a direct reflection of the drive, talent and competitive spirit of our AIS chapter here at Temple. We have been able to cultivate critical thinkers with keen eyes for award-winning technology solutions.

Students were able to network with leading executives, including the chief information officer of Walmart, Karenann Terrel, who mentioned the Fox students in her conference speech. The students also attracted attention and praise from AIS Executive Director Pete Tinsley.

Winning awards in three out of the four competitions makes the chapter one of the most decorated this year. Temple continues to be a shining example of an outstanding AIS student chapter of which others should strive to emulate.

SuitifyFor the Mobile App team, this competition was a tremendous boost to the recognition they have received since launching Suitify. The app, which allows users to store their wardrobe options, save outfits and plan clothing choices in a calendar format, has been approved for display in the Windows Phone marketplace. To date it has received an average 4.8 out of 5 rating. The app’s first-place win at the AIS competition was attributed, in part, to the group’s strong business model and projected success. 

We have plans to continue developing the app, to finish fleshing out our business model of saving users’ wardrobe data and implementing a clothing suggestion feature.

In terms of national prominence, this competition was the Fox School AIS chapter’s biggest success yet, and the students are eager to continue competing, O’Donnell said. The winning Fox School AIS teams were:

 

AMIS receives AIS 2010 Outstanding Student Chapter award

AMIS was named a 2010 Outstanding Student Chapter by the Association for Information Systems (AIS), the premier association for information systems. The association’s annual Student Chapter Awards recognize outstanding achievement among more than 3,000 students associated with AIS student organizations worldwide. AMIS is inducted as the first student chapter of AIS

Student-Chapter-PicThe Association of Management Information Systems (AMIS) was inducted as the first and founding student chapter of the Association for Information Systems (AIS). In recognition of the contribution of the Fox MIS community in leading the formation of student chapters, AMIS was the first chapter to be inducted into AIS at a special ceremony on December 16, 2009, in Phoenix, Arizona as part of the International Conference on Information Systems.
