Manage Technical Debt to Create IT Wealth

  1. Name of sponsoring organization
    1. Gartner Webinar
  2. Details of the activity (e.g., where, when)
    1. Online webinar, April 3rd
  3. What you learned
    1. This webinar taught me all about technical debt, which is defined as the cost of reworking quickly-coded software with functionality that meets longer-term needs. One of the biggest challenges with managing technical debt is making it visible, as there are no accounting requirements for it and it often goes unreported. This can result in the debt compounding with interest as well as budgets being robbed from new initiatives. This webinar emphasized the importance of planning and adapting to manage technical debt, rather than relying on guesswork. The webinar also addressed how to stop tech debt from growing too fast, such as flagging prototypes in QA and integrating security into DevSecOps.
  4. How the activity relates to coursework or your career goals
    1. Technical debt is a common challenge faced by organizations in the management of their IT systems. By attending this webinar, I learned valuable insights on how to manage technical debt to maximize IT system value while minimizing associated risks. Although I’m sure there is a lot more to it, this webinar gave me a good understanding of what technical debt is and how to handle it during my career. I believe that this will be very beneficial if I end up managing IT systems in the future.
