Leadership and Development: Agile Troubleshooting Amid Upheaval

This webinar, hosted by New Horizons, was presented by Hanna Bauer. Hanna has over 22 years of leadership and training experience and serves at a local, state, and national level. The webinar began by defining upheaval, which means a violent or sudden change or disruption to something. Hanna compared troubleshooting to being a small boat in a storm, and described the rules of engagement amid upheaval:

  • Look at the big picture.
  • There is always an answer.
  • This is an opportunity.
  • Stay true to your core.

The first step to consider is Awareness, or in other terms, keep the main thing the main thing. In this step, we must first define the problem, understand the needs of the customer, and outline the focus for the team and leadership of the organization. The second step is perspective. Ask “What is the current performance or magnitude of the problem?”. This is where we gather the most information. The third step is to ask why. Here is where the team must reflect, not react. It is important to leverage what you have, brainstorm, and develop a hypothesis of what the problem is. The fourth step is implementation. This is where we finally implement and verify solutions. This is done through communication, testing, and collecting data. The final step is to promote and enable focus. This is where the gateway of innovation is. If all of these are done correctly, you will reproduce and multiply yourself and your efforts.
