The Purpose of Work
The Digital Leader Fireside Chat, hosted by Munir Y. Mandviwalla, was joined by the CIO of AmerisourceBergen, Mark Spykerman. Mark lead the discussion about his work in Conshohocken and how he has found purpose in his career. He first considered purpose when his sister was battling cancer. She asked him, \”Will you invest in people or in things?\” The question became clearer later in his career where he joined a consulting firm in health care rather than becoming a venture capitalist, which is what he went to college for. After realizing that his work has benefited other people, he fell in love with his position and understood what his sister meant.
Mark compared the values of a mattress to one\’s career. The saying that people will spend one-third of their lives sleeping is the same time people will spend working. When choosing something like a job, you must approach it the same way you would with a mattress; to ensure maximum satisfaction. Mark ended the discussion by talking about the good and evil of technology, and how automation is more helpful than people think within the economy. Mark\’s insight was very helpful since I will be joining the workforce soon. The payback he gets from his sense of purpose is why he loves his career, and I will try to find something where I can get the same reward.
