My first programming language was C programming back when I was 16 years old. I strongly agree with the choice being Python. From what I have noticed is that coding in Python is relatively easier than other languages.
And, I am not sure if people are aware of this or not but we get a free Lynda.com subscription as temple students that we can…[Read more]

Great post, Deepali.
One of the projects that I did as an intern back in my bachelors revolved around the “heat-map” functionality, where we checked the heat-maps generated of different pages of our company’s website. It showed how the users interacted with the website and the heat-map specifically identified where the user’s cursor was moving…[Read more]

Good post, Fangzhou.
This is interesting, since this works on the principle of something you have and something you are. If the pins are needed to be punched in that will be something you know; a multifactor authentication. But I am interested as to how these retailers are going to access my thumb print? If there is going to be a third-party…[Read more]

Good post, Mengting.
This reminds me when I had installed KALI LINUX and had no idea about the seriousness and consequences of those tools. I had just watched MR. ROBOT show and wanted to try to teach myself penetration testing, etc. I also had decided to go onto the DARK WEB since a lot of reddit forums mentioned “that side” being friendlier…[Read more]

Oh, the irony! I remember founder of Telegram in the Tech Crunch disrupt constantly reminding the audience how unsafe it is to send messages on Whatsapp and Facebook messenger and how Telegram is the “Whatsapp killer” and addresses these issues and guarantees complete privacy to users for sending messages.

Good post. I think one of the biggest challenges for and especially social networking websites like Facebook is that they want to give users the power to share how much information they want to share with the third party applications but users often times are not either aware or are just too lazy to ready the pop-up notification that asks for user…[Read more]

Good point, Blake. And let’s not forget the cost associated with storing data. If they are storing it locally then costs associated with servers, networking equipment, power and cooling, etc. and if they are using a service like AWS or Azure, then the monthly subscription fee.

We have seen Benford’s law being useful for detecting financial fraud. The law predicts that in a natural occurring data set, numbers beginning with “1” should be more common than others. The law predicts that […]

I personally believe if one has a deep knowledge in technology that is when one can truly determine the impact of that technology on the enterprise and hence I think both are equally important skills. But for the sake of the argument of choosing one of them, I think depth of knowledge is more important. In this digital-first world, we are noticing…[Read more]

Hi Priya,
While I was reading the article, I felt that the lazy one would also make it at least in the top three but I didn’t think of the timid type and good points. I agree that if an auditor is a master in the a certain field but can be manipulated by a strong auditee then it defeats the whole point of the audit.

Well put, Said. I think that is what I said in my post as well. It is important to understand a technology in depth first and that is how you will understand it’s impact (value, risk, etc) on the enterprise. I think they both sort of go hand in hand.

I strongly believe that the “fake” has to be the worst type. Dr. Ed Glebstein correctly puts that while it may not be necessary for an auditor to be a master of everything but an auditor should also know when to say, “I don’t know, I will research more about it.” The reason why I think that a faker would be the worst because the consequences can…[Read more]

Hi Candace,
I was wondering what did you mean when you said the if one increases in knowledge depth about some technology and exceeds the threshold (which is the optimal level), their a reduction in innovation performance?
Thank you!

Whenever there is a mention of the word millennials, people automatically assume them to be tech savvy. From my experience, we are more tech dependent and being tech savvy is argumentative. Millennials are often tagged as the “trophy generation” and one advantage that millennials have is that they are living in an age where there is a rapid…[Read more]

Another point that just struck me is the cost associated with data warehousing and just the management of data. For companies on which data is bombarded by users everyday, for them, considering such data quality challenges, it will be very difficult to justify the data warehousing cost since warehousing…[Read more]

Rightly pointed out, Abhay. The sheer volume of data and the various channels through which data flows in coupled with the uncertainty of that data or source being unreliable makes it challenging for today’s businesses to completely rely on the data.
Only a few days back, I was reading this WSJ article (https://www.wsj.com/articles/google-agrees-to-youtube-metrics-audit-to-ease-advertisers-concerns-1487678403) about youtube’s ad metrics where concerns were raised regarding the transparency of their data. This too is a challenge as the ad giants like youtube and Facebook on one hand either need to implement third party tracking code to track viewability data or get a bad rep for playing by their own rules if they use their own data.

Thank you for the article, Mansi.
Another point that just struck me is the cost associated with data warehousing and just the management of data. For companies on which data is bombarded by users everyday, for them, considering such data quality challenges, it will be very difficult to justify the data warehousing cost since warehousing requires a size able commitment of organizational resources. Also while calculating the ROI, it will be a challenge to evaluate the benefits.

Wenlin,
Nice post. I think the key is to detect and prevent fraudulent payment patterns but in real time. From my understanding, if a group of bad guys decide to come up with a new fraud approach, it is important to detect it, first of all but it is also more important to detect it as it is happening. This will ensure that the fraud doesn’t…[Read more]
