The most important takeaway from this course is that data is available, accessible, but also can be deceiving. Data is everywhere, and everything technology related is heavily correlated with data. The government provides an extensive amount of data, and companies themselves are beginning to employ individuals in managing their own forms of data.…[Read more]

A data-driven source that I use regularly is the bleacher report app. Similar to other sports apps, it compiles all stats and advanced analytical stats, especially basketball. Each row would represent each respective player in whatever league a consumer is looking for. Each column would represent each statistic – points/rebounds/assists/steals per…[Read more]

Cybersecurity has become an increasingly prevalent problem in the past couple years, especially in an increasingly digitized society. Even still, Americans are still a little unsure of cybersecurity topics. For instance, only only 54% of surveyed Americans are able to correctly identify a phishing attack, which could give up personal data.…[Read more]

A form of KPI that I use on a regular basis is the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA). It has a Specific purpose of averaging a number of stocks and consolidating that into a single amount. The DJIA is measurable, as it is a number that measures the average performance of the top companies in our economy. It is achievable, as the it has a start…[Read more]

Of the common mistakes made in Excel, the most common one I have committed is number 9: copy formulas that use relative formulas. Though I do not use Excel that frequently, this is the problem that I run into the most. This problem occurs when I try to copy a formula in another cell and it doesn’t produce an actual value, instead it gives an error…[Read more]

I believe the “ask why” principle is the most important one. This is because misusing data can be common in instances where too much data is acquired, or if the interpretation of the results are inaccurate. Understanding “why” something is happening is at the core of the problem, and if this question is answered, then the likelihood of the data…[Read more]

Like some of my classmates, I see the sports industry being the most affected by big data, but more along the lines of sports gambling. I personally do not gamble or bet on sports, but I know a lot of individuals who do. Though there may be some casual fantasy gamblers who aren’t necessarily strategic their methods, I believe that the use of big…[Read more]

One form of conventional wisdom I’ve heard of describes individual’s behavior in a given environment. For instance, “behavior is controlled more by the environment rather than someone’s willpower.” To a point I believe this is true, especially in a business setting and when someone is in an uncomfortable environment. In order to test this…[Read more]
