Our team is using 2013 MLB baseball statistics to find out which teams and players performed the best. We also are using the statistics to identify which positions have the highest and lowest batting averages.

For Amazon.com I could see the spreadsheet being composed by order numbers with.
So column1 would include order number then there would be a sub column for each product in the order (product id number) then the row would consist of product name, quantity, user id, account id. -

Apple’s next big problem: figuring out how the FBI hacked its iPhone
One of my favorite topics right now is the FBI vs Apple case. This is very interesting to me, because it deals with the division between government and the private sector. This article talks about how the FBI cracked the encryption on the Apple phone and…[Read more]

A KPI I use daily would be grades. It’s specific and measurable, because it is out of 100% and is awarded for how much of a specific assignment I get correct. It’s attainable, because if I get everything right I receive a 100%. It’s relevant, because all teachers use it and time bound because it becomes final on a specific date.

When I first started working I use to open CSV files in Excel. To be honest, I didn’t even know I was doing it. I now always check to make sure it is an Excel file and not a CSV. Luckily for me when I sent an excel document that was supposed to be a CSV file the developer on my team he converted it to the correct format for me.

The most important of the eight data visualization principals is to be skeptical. It is crucial to verify that the data you are recieving is correct. Often in IT the data is coming from a system that a developer or DBA is retrieving for you. If the data is incorrect than what you are presenting is useless and potentially harmful.

Maurice’s presentation was more so a review of things that I have learned both on the job and through my schooling. I did learn about how QVC was leveraging data to improve its company though. I found it really interesting that they were concerned with data by the minute. When I worked in the oil industry we never looked at any data by the minute…[Read more]

The article I read dealt with an employees privacy at work. It was about an employee in Romania who sent a private email using his company’s computer and his employer viewed the message. The European Union ruled that the company was allowed…[Read more] -

An example of conventional wisdom is that many believe that a college degree makes someone smarter than someone who didn’t go to college. This is extremely difficult to test because what defines someone as “smart”. Someone who is good at math, english, history? Often the people that are considered “book smart” lack common sense. Coming from a…[Read more]

I was extremely lucky to be apart of Cigna’s Legal IT team this summer. I also was provided the opportunity to work part-time during the school year. I’ll know by September if I am going to have a job offer or not. My experience was actually kind of crazy; Anthem just bought out Cigna about a week ago. That was a little strange to go through to…[Read more]

There is a lot I’ve learned from previous internships and my current internship that are not taught in school or in textbooks. Temple is your typical college where they attempt to mold everyone into what it believes to be the ideal businessman or woman. My internships have showed me that it’s okay to stray from the CSPD cookie cutter model. In man…[Read more]

What I learned in MIS 3504 has been most beneficial to me. Since I work as a BA I have more experience from taking that class than most other interns. For Cigna I have to do assumptions, business rules, etc. and while the documents layout was different than in 3504 they still have the same concept so I was able to figure it all out. I also do a…[Read more]

Balancing work and school can be difficult. This week especially has been difficult with the storm. Unfortunately my town was hit pretty hard and we lost power for five days. That made the challenge of balancing work and school even harder. I’m able to balance both by tackling tasks as soon as I get them. Every night I’ll think about what I hav…[Read more]

Working as a BA the most important skill is the ability to effectively communicate. When we think of business and technical skills we typically think of investments, economics, coding, and/or architecture. However, communication in my experience is the most important of all. Communication is a two-way skill:
First: You have to be able to…[Read more]

When I accepted my internship with Cigna I knew it was at Two Liberty Place and that I would be taking the train form my house to Suburban Station. I assumed since Liberty Two is so big I would find it no problem. Well, on the first day I got really lost and even ended up in Liberty One. Eventually I found out how to get to Two Liberty. The next…[Read more]

I will be interning as a Business Analyst in Cigna’s Legal IT Department. My internship is part of the Early Career Development Program. For my internship I will spend about a week in Cigna’s Headquarters in Bloomfield, Connecticut and the rest will be spent in Two Liberty Place in Philadelphia, PA. While talking with my manager I was told my main…[Read more]
