Melissa Aguilar-Ramirez commented on the post, The Most Toxic Types of People to Avoid at Work, on the site 9 years, 11 months ago
I agree with the comments above. You don’t want to work with those types of people because they can affect your attitude at work. But at the same time, people need to work hard not to become these type of people because it can negatively impact your relationships at work. I also agree with Arren’s comment, but nowadays a lot of people are…[Read more]

Melissa Aguilar-Ramirez commented on the post, Integrative Thinking, on the site 9 years, 11 months ago
I too posted an article on integrative thinking and do agree with what Douglas. I do think that our education conditioned us to find a problem, break it down, analyze, and find one solution for the problem.I thiink it’s okay to continue to break problems down, but we shouldn’t focus only one part of the problem. We should focus on the entire…[Read more]

Melissa Aguilar-Ramirez commented on the post, Four Unconventional Ways To Tell If Your Workplace Culture Is Toxic, on the site 9 years, 11 months ago
While looking for jobs, a company’s culture was and still is a top priority on my list. The company culture gives you a glimpse at the type of person you’re going to be while working for that company. Like Arren said, it’s up to the employee whether or not they want to fit into the company culture. For example, at my internship they had business…[Read more]

Melissa Aguilar-Ramirez commented on the post, How To Drive Enterprise Collaboration, on the site 9 years, 11 months ago
I think that the easier the training for a collaboration tool the better. Most employees tend to freak out when there is a new technology tool presented to them. As we learned in 3535, some employees don’t adapt to change so easily. So the easier the process or the more they understand the collaboration tool, the more comfortable they are with…[Read more]

Melissa Aguilar-Ramirez commented on the post, Disruptive Innovation and Education, on the site 9 years, 11 months ago
I think that it is more disruptive towards k-12 learning. I do agree with Angela on a child needing to socialize, especially at a young age. That’s why I would wait and offer students online classes when they reach middle school. In addition, I would make the online classes completely optional allowing for both traditional and online classes. I…[Read more]

Melissa Aguilar-Ramirez commented on the post, Nailing the group presentation, on the site 9 years, 11 months ago
I agree with all of the comments above, especially the one about the key points in this article being common sense. But depending on the type of person you are it may be more difficult to follow through with these tips. I think that practicing plays an important role in a presentation, but like Arren said, too much practice can be negative. This…[Read more]

Melissa Aguilar-Ramirez wrote a new post on the site MIS4596 – Section 3 Spring 2015 9 years, 11 months ago
The main focus of this article is to deconstruct and describe a capability that comes naturally to successful leaders. Roger Martin discovers that most leaders share an unusual trait. “They have the predisposition and the capacity to hold in their heads two opposing ideas at once. And then, without panicking or simply settling for one alternative or the other, they’re able to creatively resolve the tension between those two ideas by generating a new one that contains elements of the others but is superior to both.” This is the process of consideration and synthesis, integrative thinking, that we talked about in class. Great integrative thinkers tend to be rare because people don’t really exercise this capability. Martin then explains that this type of work makes most people anxious. Most people tend to avoid complex and ambiguous problems. Most people seek out the comfort of simple and clear issues. People’s first impulse is to determine which of the two models is right and wrong, and sides may even be taken to justify their decision. People must resist their natural leaning toward simplicity and certainty to take advantage of the opposable mind. Martin says that it more of discipline rather than strategy. He then states “not every good leader exhibits this capability, nor is it the sole source of success for those who do.” But he does believe that integrative thinking greatly improves people’s odds of becoming a great leader. Martin finally discusses how an integrative thinker’s approach differs from a conventional thinker’s approach in the four stages of decision-making salience, causality, sequencing, and resolution. The conventional thinker would rather accept the world just as it is while the Integrative thinker welcomes the challenge of shaping the world for the better.
Can you become an integrative thinker?
Is this skill being taught in any of your classes?
Have you been exposed to this skill outside of your classes?

This past Wednesday evening our BAs presented to Tony Loftus of Somerville Lumber. The presentation couldn’t have gone any better. They did a thorough job at explaining the problem, their big idea, their solution, and business case. There was a minor technical problem, but they managed to pull through successfully. I was very impressed with the BAs and their work. Tony Loftus was also impressed as he did not have any questions for them, because of their thorough explanation.
As for the PMs, we’ve used the past couple days to put the finishing touches on our final deliverables. We previously outlined what we wanted to include in our binder, which made it easier to assemble the binder.

Our meeting today with our BAs was pretty successful. We reviewed the scope document and the PMs provided some comments for them. We also gave them advice/recommendations as to how to update the scope based off their professor’s comments. We asked them to upload the scope with the comments from their professor onto the Google drive. We also started discussing the prototype plan, and urged them to start working with JustinMind. In addition, we shared with them our former teams’ prototypes to give them an idea of what we did and JustinMind. We are also posting our old documents and prototypes to the Google drive to help them with their future deliverables. As for trust, I can definitely see that it is growing amongst all team members and we are starting to bond. The PMs are more helpful than before and I can tell that the BAs are starting to see that. We are definitely on track with the project and I have confidence in our team that we will remain on track.

I found the article really interesting and your question about being taught any of this in class really got me thinking. This approach to problem solving isn’t something I have run into in any of my classes. I have had assignments to read about it or write about it but never really been encouraged to really take the approach towards a problem. Of course how one approaches a problem is inherent to the person. Still though I would have liked if this was something that was encouraged in more classrooms.
