- The goal of this project was to find and utilize an API, either for practical or entertainment purposes. I chose to use an API for entertainment purposes. If a person wants some random Chuck Norris jokes, they can use my project to generate the jokes in a list format. What I learned from this project was that for some API\’s, it\’s is necessary to concatenate the URL in the post method, rather than sending serialized data.
The API found at https://www.currencyconverterapi.com/ could facilitate factory managers of international companies in understanding corporate requirements outlined in a foreign currency. For example, imagine a company headquartered in the United States, with production plants in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. If this company released a memo requiring all factories to increase their minimum wage by $2 USD and decrease annual overhead costs by $1M USD, a manager native to Mexico or Canada may not be aware of the conversion rate to their respective currency. That manager could then use an application using the Currency Converter API to convert corporate requirements from US Dollars to Mexican Pesos or Canadian Dollars.

For this project I worked with three of my MIS peers to create an application for Temple university for MIS 4596. Our app is called Owl Insider and helps students connect with each other, have better awareness of on campus activities, and even create events that they can invite friends to. We used Just In Mind prototyping tool in order to create how we want the application to work and presented in front of our class to show our final results. I learned so much about the work involved when taking an idea from just an idea to an actual prototype with a business case.
The goal of this project was test out APIs on our own time and figure how to apply it into a business aspect or entertainment. During my time in this project I learned a lot more on how APIs worked. I also experimented with different usages and functionalities that the API offered. The link to my project is here. The link to the API is here. The API is free and has a lot of different features that companies can take advantage of. There are a lot of companies out there now offering stock options on an application on your phone, and even online. We can use this API to give features to the consumers to see their portfolio, see the growth or volume traded, and even search for stocks. I have a couple of shares for both of those stocks as well, so it’s easy for me to use this API to look at the price for each minute, hour, daily. Using this API you could create a code that alerts you if the stock hits a price you are not comfortable with.
MIS announces the successful rollout of version 4 of the Community platform professional achievement program. Since 2008, the program continues to break new ground in creating a structured measurable process for student professional development that provides recognition, external and internal branding, and opportunities for high achievers. The program pioneered at Fox MIS has been licensed at other universities, while portions have been copied by others.
Changes in version 4 include:
- New e-portfolio design with interactive customizable widgets that highlight professional achievement and a verified badge
- New Dashboard analytics to manage graduation requirements and comparison with peers
- New much simpler PRO point submission, review, and management process
- More PRO point earning opportunities (e.g., study abroad)
- New calendar to locate PRO point earning opportunities
- More curriculum checkpoints for on-time graduation
- New PRO site that integrates all the information related to the program
- Much better swag
- New name – PRO!
PRO provides the structure for professional development. The goal is for students to get good jobs; so the e-portfolio badge summarizes professional achievement, the points widget lists the activities, while the posts show how each activity influences professional development. Finally, PRO points measure activities so that students can get started early and stay on track using analytics available on an integrative Dashboard.
As part of the above roll out, the overall MIS Community site was updated with new content, a new mobile responsive look and feel, including the new Community activity widget. The e-portfolios of faculty, staff, and Master’s students also have a new mobile responsive look and feel with capabilities that integrate with the main site (e.g., research news).
These statistics are just some of the findings from the latest edition of the Information Systems Job Index, produced by researchers from Temple University’s Fox School of Business, in partnership with the Association for Information Systems (AIS).
Published and released in January 2018, the third installment of the IS Job Index culled the responses of 2,140 IS graduates of the Class of 2017, from 58 universities nationwide.
Some of the index’s more-interesting findings include:
- Salaries for IS undergraduates ($62,820) are the highest among students who pursue typical business majors ($52,047).
- The percentage of women in IS jobs (39%) is more than double that of women in other STEM fields like computer science (18%).
- Internships double the likelihood of an IS student getting a job offer (39% for those who hold at least one internship vs. 16% for those who do not).
There are more than 3 million IS jobs in the U.S. alone,” said index co-author Dr. Munir Mandviwalla, associate professor of management information systems (MIS) at Temple University’s Fox School of Business. “This data is critical for parents of college-age children, current and prospective students seeking an accurate job outlook, employers, and policymakers—and it cannot be found anywhere else.
Mandviwalla conducted research for the latest installment of the IS Job Index and co-authored it with Dr. Crystal Harold, associate professor of human resource management at Temple’s Fox School of Business, and Maria Boggi, a junior MIS major in the Fox School and Temple University Honor’s programs.
The AIS-Temple Fox School Job Index is the only systematic assessment of the IS job market. It is a joint project, with support from AmerisourceBergen and LiquidHub, to produce reliable national-level data on placement, job type, satisfaction, and related factors like career services, knowledge level, preparedness, and search strategies.
Abdul Koné loves his job.
As an IT Audit Manager for Santander Consumer in Dallas, Texas, Koné’s day-to-day goes beyond sculpting and planning audits for the company and into nearly every aspect IT.
“I wouldn’t say I’m an expert in one area, but I’ve gotten such a good understanding of every area,” he says. “Also, I’ve found that managing people, empowering them, watching them grow in their field is something I love to do.”
Growing up in West Africa’s Ivory Coast, Koné’s dream career wasn’t in management or technology, but aviation — he’d always wanted to be a U.S. Air Force fighter pilot. “I came to realize that wasn’t going to be so easy,” he says with a laugh. Instead, he went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in computer science at the Canadian University of the Arts, Sciences and Management in Abidjan. Before coming to the U.S., he did some homework on the IT industry and its career possibilities, and was intrigued by the job prospects in IT auditing. Temple’s Fox School of Business was the only school of the handful he visited that offered anything like the IT Auditing and Cyber Security program. In 2012, he enrolled; by 2013 — before he had even graduated — he had his professional certification and three job offers.
“I can say that ITACS really helped me understand the business,” he says. “One of the really good parts of the program was that all of my instructors came straight from the industry, so they knew how to take all of these concepts and put them into real-life context, with practical examples. It was incredibly helpful.”
In fact, he says, it was the practical, business-focused structure of the ITACS program — from the real-life experience the capstone project provided to the resume support at the Fox School’s Center for Student Professional Development — that helped shape his career. Well, he adds, that and the quality of the people involved in the program.
“The professors were so knowledgeable, and so patient,” he says. “I had a great mentor, Michael Griffith, who taught me so much of what I know. He believed in me, which meant the world to me.”
It was Griffith, Koné says, who encouraged him to apply for the job that he ended up taking right out of ITACS — a coveted position with Morgan Stanley as an information technology auditor. A year later, when his wife’s job took them to Dallas, Koné landed at Santander, where’s he’s steadily climbed the ranks since 2014. Not only has the job given him the chance to put to use the skills he sharpened at Temple, but the career pathways in the industry are growing all the time in today’s world, he says. (In fact, he recently hired a former ITACS classmate as a senior officer at Santander.) “It’s definitely a field that’s full of opportunity,” he says.

The Bachelors in MIS produces leaders who initiate, design, and apply technology to transform business functions and produce innovative products and services. To succeed in this challenging program, you will need to have done well in high school (e.g., a 3.5 or above GPA or ranked in the top 20%), and scored in the top 20% percentile (average 1200) on SAT or ACT.
