I find that both swimlane and ERD’s are very useful tools for analyzing a business system. Neither is better than the other but it it really depends on the purpose when it comes to choosing which one to use. A farm game called HayDay on my Iphone stores the players’ data and put it on a board to rank amongst different players (usually friends on Facebook.) A row would be player’s data and some columns would be number of eggs collected, number of milk jugs collected, number of truck deliveries, etc.
