My biggest takeaway from the course is how easily data can be misconstrued and if not analyzed properly, can be misused. I really enjoyed learning about the different ways to process data and how to avoid incorrect data. For a future student, I would say learning how to use tableau is a great function of the course. That knowledge can be used to…[Read more]

A KPI that I interact with on a daily basis is my move goal which is calculated on my watch. I have set my goal at 700 calories per day, requiring me to workout to make that goal. It covers the SMART criteria because:
1) Specific: It measures exactly how many calories you have burned through activity in a day.
2) Measurable: It is easily…[Read more] -

When working for an energy efficiency company we were collecting data on energy efficiency rebate programs throughout the country. The database would then be read by a system that could auto populate the rebate applications. For the system to read the data though it needed to be formatted perfectly. It was very difficult to determine the proper…[Read more]

I believe the most important principle is to “explore.” An interactive data set allows you to get more out of the data rather than just interpreting on your own. It also encourages the maker to include all crucial data. Given our access to data today, people are more inclined to explore a data set if it is interactive than if it is just presented…[Read more]

The most important takeaway I got from Maurice’s talk is that data is important in any business. As an MIS minor, I understand that it will play a very important role in my future. The use of data is crucial for up and coming companies to survive. It was very interesting to learn about all the different ways that QVC uses data to enhance their…[Read more]

My conventional wisdom statement is “women don’t need to make as much money as men do.” The data that would need to be collected is how many women provide money for their families from the jobs that they do. Also, how many women in a family provide the necessary funds for their families to survive. This issue is big right now and the data is out…[Read more]

You could use a join to get information about how many customers have a certain size feet and which shoes fit them best. For example, if a website sells only shoes and they have the sizes they have in stock in one database and the size of the customer’s foot in another, to recommend shoes that will fit the customer best they would have to join the…[Read more]
