I think the biggest takeaway for me was being able to utilize Excel and Tableau to transform and understand data. We are always around data, even without knowing it, and in most jobs there will be some type of data usage, so being able to use the data was the biggest takeaway for me. I would tell a future MIS0855 scholar that the class can be as…[Read more]

Erin Kelly, Grace Hirsch, and I are going to be looking at and analyzing the City of Philadelphia employee salaries that was just released last week. We will be seeing which departments earn the most gross salary and which have earned the most YTD overtime pay, as well as some other factors from the data.

A KPI I use at work is the number of patrons in the fitness facilities. Everyone has to swipe their ID to get into the facilities, so we can gather name and ID# and also how many times they swipe their idea. However, for my position, we solely look at the number of patrons, not who is coming in or how many times. It is specific and measurable…[Read more]

A data driven service I use frequently is Instagram. Each row could be a different posting, and the columns could be Username, Date Posted, Time Posted, and the Location (if it was included). Since you don’t have to include a location, some posts may have an “N/A” for that specific column.

I have made mistakes with number 3 the most. For whatever reason, there have often been power outages in Pearson and McGonigle Halls, and these power outages have occurred when I was working with data and Excel. Each time, I never seem to learn my lesson, however, and rarely save frequently.

As as tourism and hospitality management, I always love to read about why people are travelling and the megatrends Skift put out each year really attest to what is going on. I especially found interesting that there will be a shift in focus from Millennials to Gen Z – I personally…[Read more]

In my opinion, simplify is the most important. In most cases, not even just with data and data visualizations, simplifying makes working much easier – it requires all information to be laid out, and then advancing to next steps comes more easily. While it may require more work initially, knowing the information in front of you allows for a better…[Read more]

I think one of the most important takeaways is that the facts we are finding on the internet may not always be “fact.” Due to our locations, preferences, past searches, and other factors, the information that we are searching for is tailored to what we ‘want’ to see, versus what may be more true or something else. I have had this happen to me when…[Read more]

As a Tourism and Hospitality Management major and avid traveler, I always want to know I’m getting or giving a good deal when it comes to traveling, especially within hotels. At almost any hotel now, you can sign up for some type of rewards or loyalty program,…[Read more]

I found a data set on data.gov about bullying rates dropping in schools. I have friends who were bullied in grade school and high school, so I know how it can affect someone, and I thought this set was interesting because it shows that younger students may be pushing toward a more equal classroom. I learned that the rate of bullied students was…[Read more]

A piece of conventional wisdom I hear a lot is “it’s not about what you know, it’s who you know.” I would collect data based on recent college graduates who got jobs based on connections they made in college, via internships or volunteer opportunities versus those who got jobs based on passing exams (i.e. CPA).
