If I were talking to a future MIS0855 scholar, one of the things I would tell him is to pay attention to the minor details. There were several times that not doing this hurt my grade in a big way throughout the semester. On the first assignment, I misread what was expected of me in terms of the sources and it is the reason I didn’t get an A.…[Read more]

One data-driven source that I use a lot is Twitter. The columns would represent different twitter accounts/profiles and then the rows would be the different things that account has liked or retweeted. The rows could also represent the amount of likes a retweets that each individual post received. Columns could also represent different subjects…[Read more]

It sounds kind of silly, but our groups biggest challenge was trying to figure out what exactly the professor was looking for considering this assignment didn’t come with a straight guideline. This was more of an open ended assignment which allowed the class to have freedom in how their assignment was constructed, which can be fun, however, it…[Read more]

A KPI that I use frequently in my daily life is Yahoo for my fantasy football sports league. It’s specific and measurable because it shows me where I currently am in the standings of my league as well as the average points per matchup that my team scores. It is achievable because I get to decide what players to start every week as well as what…[Read more]

I have made one of the mistakes stated in the article many times. I have a tendency to start working on a database without doing a full backup first. There have been times where i have gotten away with it without anything happening, but there have also been times where something would crash or restart or accidentally close out and all of my…[Read more]

I personally think the “Be Skeptical” principle is the most important. Whenever you’re dealing with large amounts of data, there are always going to be some correlations. The fact is that some of those correlations are just coincidences and if you’re not skeptical of the info and don’t make sure that the correlations are accurate then you could…[Read more]

I found one of the very first charts that Mr Celebi showed us which provided the change in fuel efficiency, fares, and fatal accidents over the years. I was not at all surprised by the negative correlation between fatal accidents and fares as obviously plane prices will drop following any public plane incident. However, I did find it interesting…[Read more]

This article was interesting for two separate reasons. First off it was data on a wide range of things that were totally random. However, most of them were important information, such as the correlation between someones birth weight and height and the fallacies that go along with…[Read more] -

An example of conventional wisdom is to not eat an excessively large meal directly before going for a run/working out. This could be tested by comparing the amount of time a person works out and how they feel afterwards between people who eat a large meal right before working out and people who either don’t eat right before or just have a light…[Read more]
