My experience at Merck has been nothing but a great experience for me. I have been selected to interview for Merck’s IT Emerging talent program. It is basically a rotational program where you rotate through different roles within the IT organization to find your best fit. I am not sure what will be the outcome of it until that time comes. However,…[Read more]

As previous students said, communication and learning specific applications are something that are best taught in a work setting as well as many others. In business communications, we were taught how to communicate effectively theoretically. Courses that I have leveraged in internship would have to be MIS 2501, the excel course, and business communications. In my internship I use statistical softwares Minitab, JMP, and Spotfire which are similar to the R/RStudio we used in 2501. I also write SQL from time to time therefore learning how to write SQL in 2501 was also helpful. The excel…[Read more]

Balancing school work and an internship can be a challenge. However, being aware of what needs to be done can make it more easier. For example, at work we utilize Microsoft Outlook which organizes any meetings I have. I also have a to-do list at my desk so I always glance over it to make sure what i need to do is being worked on. For schoolwork, I…[Read more]

At Merck, the people who I am surrounded by are very welcoming and are always encouraging me to seek help from them if needed, which is great since I am new and do not know everything. I was given a tour of the site which is pretty huge at Merck where I was shown the restrooms and cafeterias are located. As one of the classmates mentioned, there…[Read more]

One off the biggest takeaways in this semester is learning the power of analyzing data. I appreciate the exercises we used in Excel because Excel is used throughout the business world. Zillow is a website that lists houses to rent/buy. Zillow uses R to create and update the estimates of prices. Once you find the average prices of houses in an area, you can reasonably come up with a price that is common for a house in the same area.

This infographic is great because it is simple and easy to read. It does not have any unnecessary data ink therefore it is not cluttered with other information. The colors are eye catching and it is keen to the eye. -

At a supermarket there can be a customer table and a purchase order table. You can combine the two to see how many times a customer bought a certain item from the supermarket. From there the supermarket could possibly send emails with coupon codes to customers advertising a discount price that they can use to encourage the customer to buy a…[Read more]

The trickiest part of an ERD diagram in my own opinion is figuring out the cardinality from entity to entity. The advice I would give someone is to carefully read the scenario/statement and once you pick a cardinality, make sure it makes sense and try to match it to the scenario/statement to the best of your ability.

Previously I have worked for a store called Five Below. As each product is being purchased there is a system in the back office where we can track which products are being sold and the quantities of products being sold. From viewing these we are able to recognize which categories or products are sold the most.
