The selected LinkedIn Learning courses provided valuable information about utilizing Microsoft Office as project management software, and how to lead change and invoke design thinking in the workplace. The Microsoft Office course provided detailed steps of how to manage team tasks in Excel, link timing and tasks, add resources, connect tasks to resources, create different views, and easily share products through Microsoft’s interface. The Leading Change course provided steps as to how to create a workplace environment that prioritizes design thinking by creating ultra-collaborative environments, creating a team, align goal, and spark innovation throughout the process. The AWS Academy Cloud Foundations Canvas course provided an in-depth understanding of the materials we learned in MIS 3406 – Cloud Architecture. We first learn about the advantages of the Cloud, especially in regards to its scalability and cost-effectiveness, along with an introduction to the AWS Cloud Adoption Framework. Through case studies, we also learn how to optimize cost through AWS’s various services and their relevance to business needs. Then the course introduces the functionality of various AWS services, such as EC2, Lambda, and other compute services, database services like DynamoDB, and AWS networking and content delivery services such as Cloudfront. We also learn about the concept of the AWS Global Infrastructure – that is, availability zones, regions, and edge locations that all serve to ensure fault-tolerance, high availability, elasticity and scalability. Through our labs, we learn about cloud security, working with features such as AWS IAM. We also learn to build out a VPC, launch a web server, and launch Amazon EC2 instances, which we learn how to do in detail in our MIS 3406 In-Class Activities as well. Another lesson found both in the MIS 3406 coursework and in the AWS Academy Cloud Foundations course is the introduction of storage services like Amazon S3. In later labs, we learn how to build a database server, and learn of the differences between database services like Amazon Aurora, DynamoDB, and Amazon Redshift. We then learn about troubleshooting through the AWS Trusted Advisor, which is a tool that can provide guidelines and recommendations after looking at a practitioner’s specific AWS environment and aligning the environment with AWS best practices.In the last module, we learn about the 3 types of Elastic Load Balanging: the Application Load Balancer, the Network Load Balancer, and the Classic Load Balancer. In our last lab,  we created an Amazon Machine Image, a load balancer, and learn to auto-scale new instances. Finally, we learn about the benefits of Amazon CloudWatch for performance monitoring and troubleshooting. Through labs, case-studies, and in-depth videos, this course teaches many integral foundations for becoming a cloud practitioner.  

As a part of my MIS2402 coursework, I took on an optional project to earn MIS Professional Achievement points. The goal was to delve into web APIs and JSON data, learning to apply programming skills. My task involved creating a web page with a button that, when clicked, fetched data from a JSON source.

My Hypothesis stated that “Famous landmarks in New York City, with historical or iconic significance, draw in a considerable number of tourists. They also play a vital role in shaping borough cultures, influencing local development, and contributing significantly to the city’s tourism-driven economy.” The data that was fetched from the API demonstrates the number of landmarks in different areas of New York City and the total number of Individual Landmarks. Showing how this information supports the hypothesis.

In the course MIS 4596: Managing Enterprise Cybersecurity under the instruction of Professor Lanter, I gained a comprehensive understanding of the managerial aspects surrounding information security. This course delved into the multifaceted nature of security, covering a diverse array of topics such as technical elements like cryptography, managerial considerations such as policy compliance, physical security measures like door locks, and even psychological aspects like social engineering. A primary goal of the course was to cultivate a security mindset, encouraging students to adopt an attacker’s perspective to identify potential vulnerabilities and exploit them. Through this holistic approach, the course equipped me with a well-rounded knowledge base, emphasizing the interconnectedness of various security dimensions in the realm of enterprise cybersecurity.

Through the completion of Milestone 3 and Milestone 4 in the cybersecurity penetration testing and risk assessment projects, I gained valuable insights and skills that are crucial for a successful career in cybersecurity. These milestones not only enhanced my technical proficiency in identifying vulnerabilities in public-facing webservers but also honed my ability to communicate complex findings and recommendations effectively.

In Milestone 3, I learned the importance of conducting blind penetration tests, simulating real-world scenarios where limited information is available. This experience not only sharpened my technical prowess but also underscored the significance of thorough reconnaissance and meticulous evaluation. Milestone 4, with its focus on recommending controls to mitigate identified vulnerabilities, provided a comprehensive understanding of how to bridge the gap between assessment findings and actionable solutions.

The integration of NIST special publication 800-53 and the NIST Cybersecurity Framework further enriched my knowledge by offering a structured approach to selecting and implementing controls. This meticulous process of cross-referencing vulnerabilities with relevant controls underscored the importance of aligning security measures with industry standards and best practices.

As I reflect on these milestones, I recognize the critical role effective communication plays in the field of cybersecurity. The ability to convey technical information, such as penetration test findings and recommended controls, to non-technical stakeholders is paramount. This experience has equipped me with not only technical skills but also the ability to articulate cybersecurity concerns and solutions in a clear and concise manner.

In my future career in cybersecurity, I plan to apply the lessons learned from these milestones by approaching security assessments with a comprehensive and methodical mindset. I will prioritize the integration of industry standards and frameworks in my recommendations, ensuring that cybersecurity measures align with established guidelines. Moreover, I will leverage effective communication skills to bridge the communication gap between technical and non-technical stakeholders, fostering a collaborative and proactive approach to cybersecurity within organizations. Ultimately, these milestones have laid a solid foundation for my career, emphasizing the importance of continuous learning, adherence to best practices, and clear communication in the dynamic and evolving field of cybersecurity.

For my MIS 2402 Pro Point Project, I opted to create an HTML webpage incorporating JavaScript to retrieve and analyze a JSON dataset sourced from https://catalog.data.gov/dataset. The chosen dataset, titled “CDC Data – U.S. State Life Expectancy by Sex, 2020,” was processed using an Ajax call to compute three key statistics. These included the average life expectancy for both males and females across all U.S. states, as well as identifying the minimum and maximum life expectancies for both genders along with the corresponding states. This project not only showcased my proficiency in web development but also demonstrated the practical application of data analysis techniques within a real-world context.

At the conclusion of MIS 3535, Professor Martin offered her class the chance to further their learning through LinkedIn training in essential project management skills.  The first being the Learning Design Thinking activity.  In this learning set, Turi McKinley goes over different approaches towards problem solving and establishing connections with individuals for everyday success for project management.  The course begins by going over design thinking and what can facilitate and destroy ideas.  By being open and seeing ideas through, it can create an abstract spaces for individuals to express their ideas.  Turi McKinley specifically pushes the notion that inviting unusual perspectives and allowing opportunities to grow is essential towards not only design thinking, but creating a space where individuals can flourish.  She then goes on to the idea of creative collaboration.  While creating a space where individuals can freely think and express themselves is important, making sure the project maintains a user centered design needs to be at the forefront of design thinking.  This then leads us into hypothesis generation, journey mapping, synthesis, and concepting.  Overall, this course taught me a lot about leading a project.  Important items such as; design thinking being a cultural mindset, not a process, and that the best companies know not only the people using their products, but the team members creating it as well.

While it may not be conducive towards design thinking, I am looking forward to implementing some of these strategies into my everyday life, starting with my position as president on the Temple Wrestling team.  We may not be putting out a tangible product for consumers but we can always brainstorm better processes for our club to run on.

 

The second course I enrolled in was Microsoft 2016 Essential Training.  While the first course “Learning Design Thinking” was based primarily on soft skills, Microsoft Essential Training was based on developing core technical skills in Microsoft Office. I enjoyed both courses, however I felt that this training would be more applicable towards my career moving forward.  Sometimes I struggle with planning out the necessary steps towards developing a project, and then further executing the plan, and this course took me through each individual step of project creation from a technical standpoint.

The program began by first setting up each task that must be completed, along with the time constraints of that leg of the project, as well as sub-tasks that needed to be completed in order to completely finish the overarching task.  Then, we moved into linking those tasks, and creating variables for the resources that must be used in order to complete said task.  Overall, the course was 6 hours in length, so summarizing the full extent of what I learned would be a bit challenging.  The course was incredibly in depth, and while I’m sure I may forget a few useful tips here and there, I have no doubt that I will be able to use this course as a reference point in future classes or work projects to make sure that I stay on time and on budget.

Being in the Fox School of Business, I am well versed in Microsoft Excel, as I have used it for the better half of four years at this point.  With that being said, almost this entire course was foreign to me after the first hour or so.  It is actually fascinating what somebody who knows excel inside and out can do, and I have added it to the list of skills I would like to master by the time I enter the workforce.

Overall, I am glad I participated in this pro point opportunity, as it was a nice mix of soft and hard skills, and it gave me something to work for this winter while I am off of school.  I will be on the lookout for more LinkedIn learnings centered around Excel technical development, and I am looking forward to expanding on this knowledge.

The Leading Change LinkedIn Learning course taught me the efficiency of design thinking leaders and the importance of insights on goal-setting and engagement with diverse team members. A highlighted aspect in the course was the significance of collaboration, reinforcing shared insights and engagement in discussions. Encouraging active participation and offering opportunists for the team to apply their skills are some of the key elements in leading change. This course also taught me the skills to guide creative collaboration, covering essential aspects such as planning, research, and the development of a “service blueprint” to transform design concepts into reality. The skills I’ve learned have empowered me to adopt a design thinking mindset to lead teams effectively.

In “Leading Change, instructor Turi McKinley;s focus was on a user-centered approach to problem solving through design thinking methodologies. This course exercised my knowledge on understanding and implementing thinking principles. THe main topics covered consisted of what is design thinking, leading design thinking, guiding creative collaboration, and making advance thinking. Each chapter provided a foundational understanding of design thinking, how to lead, inspire creativity, and thinking beyond protyping. Mckinley emphasized the importance of collaboration and equipped me with practical skills to lead and taught me how to become a proper active member in design-focused initiatives.

 

The second certification was for the LinkedIn learning course on Microsoft® Project 2016, a powerful project management software. In this activity, my role was to master the core features of Microsoft Project 2016. This course covered a range of topics including working with project, setting up project files, creating tasks, linking and timing tasks, creating resources, assigning tasks to resources, working with views, fine-tuning with project schedule, tracking and managing a project, viewing and reporting project information, and sharing projects. Throughout this course I had learned how to efficiently set up projects with Micharosoft Project, how to manage tasks, adjust task timing, create and manage different types of resources, and build realistic project schedules. This course also provided me insights into identifying scheduling issues, creating baselines, and utilizing different perspectives on project management. With my knowledge from this course I am now better about to understand Microsoft Project 2016 core software features and how to build a practical application with it for project management.
