Great Teacher Award for David Schuff

DavidSchuffGTATrophyProfessor David Schuff, chair of the MIS department received Temple’s most prestigious teaching award, the Temple University Great Teacher Award at a special university convocation on March 28, 2019. 

According to the university official documentation:

“Established in 1988 by the Board of Trustees, the Temple University Great Teacher Awards recognize faculty members annually for their continuous excellence in teaching. Each award carries a stipend and each awardee receives a commemorative sculpture and framed certificate. In addition, each recipient’s name is engraved on the Great Teachers Wall in the Founder’s Garden. ” 

Capstone projects focus on analytics, matching, procurement, biometrics, and contact management

Sandbox 2017MIS seniors presented final projects at the Fall 2017 Capstone Project Showcase.  The showcase featured ten teams of seniors who presented projects on everything from automated grocery store checkout to a better way to find events in the area.

The winning team, which was selected by a panel of industry experts and Temple faculty, designed a platform for engineers to procure and track equipment for universities and makerspaces. The platform uses digital forms and cloud technology to procure lab equipment transparently. Mentored by Chris Cera, CEO of Arcweb Technologies, the Sandbox team of Shawn Niederriter, Ed Lahm, Zach Trona, and Ken Fong received a $500 prize.

An application that analyzes student data, identifies patterns, and provides suggestions for how MIS students can earn MIS Professional Achievement Points to ensure that they graduate on time.

An application that utilizes historical data to provide better academic planning recommendations to academic advisors and course administrators.

RoomMe
An application that provides a centralized platform for college students to identify and connect with potential roommates based on various preferences.

A central hub for users to identify events in their area, connect with others attending those events, and arrange for safe transportation to and from the area.

An application that combines real-time biometric data with GPS to allow police offers to more efficiently call for back-up when in pursuit of a suspect.

A mobile application that allows grocery shoppers to scan as they go and manually check out rather than waiting in line at the store.

Rather than using physical business cards, Intro allows users to sync their social media accounts and contact information into one application so that it can be shared with others in an instant.

MIS alum, Gord Burtch receives two international awards

Gordon BurtchGordon Burtch (Ph.D., 2013), Assistant Professor of Information and Decision Sciences and Lawrence Fellow, University of Minnesota, Carlson School of Management received the 2017 Association for Information Systems – AIS Early Career Award. Gord is one of five recipients worldwide. He also received the 2017 Information Systems Society Sandra A. Slaughter Early Career Award of The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS). Gord is a Temple MIS alum who was advised by Dr. Sunil Wattal. 

Alum Ron Riddell ’68 endows 100K scholarship

When Ron Riddell graduated with a B.B.A. from Temple in 1968 computers were, he says, a “mystic temple in society.” But, armed with his degree, Riddell found himself in the computer field, and wound up, nearly 40 years later, with a successful career as a mainframe programmer. He’s currently a system support analyst and Assistant Vice President at Wells Fargo Bank.

Part of the achievement he attributes to luck, but “with out a degree at Temple I wouldn’t have gotten where I’m at…it opened doors to reasonable success.”

Now he’s helping other Temple students get their degrees, and have a chance at finding open doors, by funding the Ron and Ronda Riddell Endowed Scholarship with a $50,000 gift which is being matched by the Fox School for a total endowment of $100,000.

Munir Mandviwalla, Associate Professor and Chair, MIS, says the gift is “transformational because it will support hard working Temple students who choose business technology as a career. It is also the first such gift in the short history of the department.”

Riddell understands hard work and tight finance. He chose Temple because he could afford the tuition and live at home (commuting to class was common at the time). He got a further boost about two years into his studies. Temple became “state-related,” a designation that Pennsylvania gives universities that are independently run, but receive financial appropriations—in exchange for offering tuition discounts to students that are residents of Penn.

It was while he was at school that he met his future wife, Ronda Currens, although she didn’t attend Temple. The two met at church and she was only in Philly for a year before going home to Minneapolis. “ Four and a half years, and a lot of phone calls later,” the two married.

A job at Philco was Riddell’s first open door. After 18 months in production, he moved into programming. At the time, Philco was heavily involved in defense contracting, including work with NASA. His first computer was a Burroughs with 256 kilobytes. “I’ve got more memory sitting in my programmable alarm clock,” he points out.

The position at Philco lead to a stint at The Franklin Mint, then years of work at Combustion Engineering (a company who, at the time, was a leader in the development of both fossil and nuclear steam supply power systems.)

Then he took a job with Fidelity Bank and he’s now bee n in banking for 30 years.

“I didn’t build a better mousetrap. I got lucky getting a job in computers when demand was high.” Riddell says. He also invested, and lived a comfortable but modest life with Ronda (who succumbed to MS in 2009).

He wanted to do something that was large enough to make an impact, and the endowed fund does just that.

He also hopes that naming the scholarship after his wife, Ronda, will help people remember her. She was with him for 45 years.

Most importantly, though, “if it helps get a kid through college” then Riddell’s more than happy to have made sure doors continue to open.

Fox AIS student chapter earns top honors in global contest

AIS wins competition May 2012Fifteen students from the Fox School’s Association for Information Systems (AIS) student chapter recently traveled to Provo, Utah, where they participated in the first-ever international AIS student chapter competition and earned first or second place in each of the categories they entered. The event included approximately 150 participants from 24 schools.

AIS is the premier global organization for information systems. The Fox School’s AIS chapter was the first student chapter in the world and was named a 2010 and 2011 Outstanding Chapter. This April, four teams of students advanced to the AIS competition finals in three categories: Mobile App, IT Video and IT Risk. Three of the four teams came out on top and earned international recognition with first- and second-place wins during the annual AIS student leadership conference.

Fox’s Mobile App team, which developed Sutify – an app to manage users’ professional wardrobes – and the IT Video team, which produced a video promoting IT as a career choice, won first place in their respective categories. One of the two IT Risk teams won second place in the IT Risk category for a detailed case study.

In addition to making it to the finals in Utah and winning first and second place in their target categories, Temple’s AIS students also presented at two sessions during the conference, held in conjunction with the competition. One of the presenters was Michelle Dy-Reyes, outgoing president of Temple AIS.

The recent AIS student chapter competition awards were a direct reflection of the drive, talent and competitive spirit of our AIS chapter here at Temple. We have been able to cultivate critical thinkers with keen eyes for award-winning technology solutions.

Students were able to network with leading executives, including the chief information officer of Walmart, Karenann Terrel, who mentioned the Fox students in her conference speech. The students also attracted attention and praise from AIS Executive Director Pete Tinsley.

Winning awards in three out of the four competitions makes the chapter one of the most decorated this year. Temple continues to be a shining example of an outstanding AIS student chapter of which others should strive to emulate.

SuitifyFor the Mobile App team, this competition was a tremendous boost to the recognition they have received since launching Suitify. The app, which allows users to store their wardrobe options, save outfits and plan clothing choices in a calendar format, has been approved for display in the Windows Phone marketplace. To date it has received an average 4.8 out of 5 rating. The app’s first-place win at the AIS competition was attributed, in part, to the group’s strong business model and projected success. 

We have plans to continue developing the app, to finish fleshing out our business model of saving users’ wardrobe data and implementing a clothing suggestion feature.
