IT Intern – Project Management

July – August 2019

While I spent the summer of my sophomore year interning in a digital marketing company in Wilmington, DE, this time, I got to experience a completely different kind of internship. In the summer of my junior year, I worked as an IT Intern at Alexion Pharmaceuticals in New Haven, CT. We had six IT interns working on different projects supervised by different managers. Here’s the IT Intern Class of 2019:

For my project, I was responsible in leading the Regulatory Information Management (RIM) publishing tool upgrade project for Regulatory Operations team. The publishing tool is used to validate and publish various submissions, and the upgrade is done to make sure that Alexion is always compliant with regards to RIM.

To kickstart the project, I interviewed three stakeholders to help me define the project scope and document the appropriate requirements. Then, I organized a detailed six-month project plan by creating a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) on Ms Project. The project plan is used to facilitate high level objectives into actionable tasks that provide a concrete way to execute scope. It is also an effective way to monitor progress to ensure project is on time, on budget, and on scope.

From my short time with Alexion, I was able to make a meaningful impact by championing project success. More importantly, I contributed in setting up the Regulatory Operations team for success by putting them on a pathway to ensure that their tool and future submissions are always compliant and stay aligned with the framework of how Alexion does business.

Beyond my day-to-day work, I was able to learn more about the company culture through various events such as Global Service Day, Patient Journey Simulation, etc.

Despite not having any direct interactions with their patients, I could see how the work that I did, and that the IT department does as a whole, would impact the patients.

I am grateful to have the opportunity to thrive in such an inspiring work environment and learn to live the company mission through my work!
