Workshop Leader – Text Analytics with Python

I led an interactive and hands-on technical development workshop for Temple AIS on the topic of Text Analytics with Python along with Nhi Nguyen, the Director of IT for AIS. This past summer, I learned Python out of my own curiosity since it is not in the MIS curriculum. I am grateful that my curiosity and initiative allowed me to give back to the AIS community through leading this workshop!
We taught around 70 students, most without any prior experience with Python, how to pre-process text (unstructured data) using NLP (Natural Language Processing) for a sentiment analysis. Students learned how to iterate their code in Jupyter Notebook and use various Python packages to do the following to a given text before performing a sentiment analysis: break it down to smaller chunks, remove various kinds of noise, convert inflected words to the root words, and assign appropriate tagging based on the context and definition.
