The most important takeaway from this course comes directly from all the exercises and homework of SQL and R. The analytics of data is on the rise and having an extra skillset is always prevalent. I’ve already been able to speak upon my ability to analyze data and any employer has always been interested in what I have said. As a risk major, I…[Read more]

A Thanksgiving-themed question could be what people from different states prefer for their sides. Data needed would the sales of the sides, the different regions of states, and some demographics. This type of data analysis would be very useful for a supermarket to know how to appeal to their shoppers in regions and what to stock up on.

An example could be for a restaurant on whether or not a customer will also purchase a drink once they bought a sandwich. The data needed to perform could be age, sex, location, order price, and order quantity. An analysis like this could be beneficial for marketing purposes for a store to boost sales. Selecting the right predictor variables in…[Read more]

A data cube we didn’t discuss in class could be if a baseball team wanted to see what hitters batted for the highest average in their home stadium last year. The measured facts would be hits and at-bats (computed for average). The dimensions would be player, stadium, and season year.

Shoe sizes can be formatted several different ways. For example, a Men’s size 11 in America would be a 44 in Europe. To reconcile such a conflict, a VLOOKUP function can match up the separate values and you can convert them and choose a single format

I think this animation is a great visulization of how the use of home siding has changed over 40 years. It tells a story of how brick has drastically decreased while vinyl has become much more popular. It is very simple and fun from the moving pieces and…[Read more]

At a previous internship for an accounting firm, one of my duties included keeping track of a database. An example of a join in that scenario would be if I used a join to combine the list of clients I was currently working on with a table describing the services they needed done. I would then take the necessary files to the people in the office…[Read more]

The hardest part about creating an ERD from a problem description is finding the tiny details that complete it through cardinality. The smallest misstep in defining how entities relate can throw off the entire scenario. A one-to-many or many-to-many can be tricky but it is important to be very methodical in reading. The “other attributes” that fit…[Read more]

One that immediately comes to mind for me is using fantasy baseball. For example, raw data can be a hitter’s current stretch. Those counting stats, such as hits or runs, can lead to information as whether they can be an asset for a team throughout the season.

I learned way more than I originally expected but the most important takeaway from this course was the impact of data. I never realized how much of an impact it has and how it really is everywhere. Yet, an even more important takeaway would be making my major MIS, which is very possible. I would describe this class as an insightful introduction…[Read more]

Since the baseball season started today, one site I use regularly is ESPN’s fantasy baseball site to manage my teams. Putting the data for it into a spreadsheet would be very easy. In rows, there would be the names of all the players. In columns would be the positions, team name, and all of the various stats including homeruns, hits, or strikes.

As a business student, one of the most important and obvious KPIs is profit. Profit is the value taken from the costs subtracted from revenues. That value is specific, it comes out to be one number and it is measurable using the formula for it. It is achievable, you can alter your costs and revenue to get more profit. It is relevant because…[Read more]

Two years ago, in my junior year of high school, I had an accounting course. In that class, I learned about and went through excel. I remeber the several mistakes the system can make. One mistake I remembered when reading this article was number six, miss the data type. Excel can misrepresent dates put in cells with integers, causing confusion.…[Read more]

The most important core principle from Stephen Few is to simplify. Good data captures the essence of data without oversimplifying. The other 8 principles play major roles but if the data is very complicated and complex then, it will be immediately seen as bad data. Data must be easily translated and viewable, all else follows.

I found last week’s readings and discussions very interesting, especially the talk of the different bias in data. This is very important when using data because there are many underlying factors not even considered that could have a significant effect on data. Last week, when my girlfriend and I were deciding where to eat, we took to yelp to…[Read more]

2. I found this data on operndataphilly.org

4. I learned about all the different crimes and rates of those going on. That information could be very…[Read more]
