Award criteria
Student Leadership

Eligibility: All full time undergraduate MIS students, all full and part-time MIS graduate students.
Who can nominate: Any Temple affiliated person including students, faculty, and administration, as well as alumni.
Faculty Leadership
Given annually to a faculty member who has made a significant contribution to the students and extended community of the MIS department.
Eligibility: Full and part-time faculty who have been employed at Temple for at least two semesters including the current term.
Who can nominate: Any Temple affiliated person including students, faculty, and administration, as well as alumni.
Administrative Leadership
This award is given annually to an administrator who has made a significant contribution to the students and extended community of the MIS department.
Eligibility: Full time administrators of the Fox School of Business and Management who have been employed at Temple for at least two semesters including the current term. Administrators of the MIS department are not eligible for this award. (Updated 3/2017)
Who can nominate: Any Temple affiliated person including students, faculty, and administration, as well as alumni.
Award selection process
A committee selects the above three award recipients. The committee is chaired by the MIS awards coordinator and includes at least one faculty, administrative, current student, and alumni representative and the department chair. Normally, the committee is comprised of previous recipients of the award.
Professional and Academic Achievement Award
Professional achievement is professional development, career knowledge, leadership, networking, and readiness for the workplace. Professional achievement is different from academic achievement, which is measured by excellence in the classroom and grades. Both are important. This award is designed to recognize MIS students who are excelling in both academics and professional achievement on a per-term basis.
Eligibility: All full-time undergraduate MIS students with a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher.
Criteria: Each eligible student will receive a score based on their GPA and Professional Achievement Points. The freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior with the highest score in a given term will receive the award. In the event of a tie, the MIS Awards Coordinator will call for an ad-hoc committee to determine the winner(s).
The scores for eligible students are calculated twice a year. The first calculation is for the spring/summer term award and the second calculation is for the fall term award. Each winner will receive a certificate to recognize their work in the Professional Achievement Program.
The score is calculated per term by taking the sum of the GPA Percentage and Points Percentage for students during that particular term.
GPA Percentage = [(Term GPA / 4.0)) * 100]
Points Percentage = [(Term Points / 600) * 100]
Score = [GPA Percentage] + [Points Percentage]
Notes about the calculation:
- 600 is the theoretical maximum number of Professional Achievement Points earnable in one term.
- Point and in-term GPA values are expressed as percentages to give each an equal weight in the calculation.
- Students are categorized as Freshmen/Sophomore/Junior/Senior as follows:
- Freshman: 0 to 29 Credits
- Sophomore: 30 to 59 Credits
- Junior: 60 to 89 Credits
- Senior: 90 to 119+ Credits
MIS Researcher of the Year
Recognizes outstanding MIS-focused scholarly research publications appearing in print in the prior year. The primary award criteria is a scoring system for publication of high quality MIS-centric peer-reviewed journal articles. (Criteria updated 2/2010)
Eligibility: Full-time faculty of Temple University
Guidelines
- Published articles qualify only if Temple University is identified as the author’s affiliated organization.
- Published articles qualify only if they have an MIS focus. If the MIS focus of an article is not obvious then the awards coordinator will rely on the author for clarification.
- Only publications with a publication date of the previous calendar year are considered for point scoring (e.g., for the 2010 award, publications in 2009 are considered); the publication date is determined by when the article is in print (e.g., the year used in scholarly citations).
- Articles qualify for Tier I as long as they meet all other criteria and the journal is a Fox A-list publication.
- If one or more faculty published a qualifying Tier I journal article, only those faculty are eligible for the award. If only one faculty member published a qualifying Tier I journal article, they are the award winner, regardless of the point totals of other faculty members. When two or more faculty have qualifying Tier I journal articles, award determination will proceed based on point totals among only those faculty.
Scoring
- Qualifying articles published in MISQ or ISR receive 6 points.
- Qualifying articles published in all other Tier I publications receive 5 points.
- Qualifying articles published in a non-Tier I publication appearing on the Fox target journal list receive 3 points.
- Qualifying articles published in any other refereed journal receive 1 point.
Tie-Breaker
If there is tie in point values from qualifying journal articles, the awards coordinator will form an ad-hoc committee to identify the winner. This committee is instructed to consider the following additional factors in selecting the award winner: other scholarly output (e.g., books, conference proceedings, presentations), scholarly impact of eligible work, best paper awards, scholarly grant applications and awards, and any other activity that promotes the research profile of the Fox MIS Department.
Faculty Teaching Award (full-time)
Recognizes outstanding teaching in the prior year (e.g., the award given at the 2021 ceremony is for courses taught during the 2020 calendar year). (Criteria updated 3/2021)
Eligibility
Full-time faculty of the Management Information Systems department who taught two or more courses in the previous calendar year (summer courses included) and met the departmental teaching rigor requirement.
Selection Process
- MIS Awards Coordinator reviews teaching evaluation data and for each eligible full-time faculty member calculates the average of four questions on the student feedback forms for all courses taught by them in the previous calendar year (including spring, summer, and fall semesters):
- Q13 – The instructor promoted a classroom atmosphere in which I felt free to ask questions. (Before Fall 2020: Q5 – The instructor promoted a classroom atmosphere in which I felt free to ask questions.)
- Q12 – The feedback I received in this class helped improve my learning. (Before Fall 2020: Q6 – The instructor provided useful feedback about exams, projects, and assignments.)
- Q3 – Overall, the instructor was effective in helping me learn the material in this course. (Before Fall 2020: Q8 – The instructor taught this course well.)
- Q4 – Overall, I learned a great deal from this course. (Before Fall 2020: Q11 – I learned a great deal in this course.)
The obtained score is used to select a short list of top five candidates.
- Student nominations are collected by survey sent to all MIS majors through two questions:
- Which instructor was the most impactful for you among the MIS courses you took over the past year?
- In what ways has this instructor made a difference to you.
- The collected information is considered by the MIS Teaching Awards Committee to determine the winner. The criteria for the selection process includes:
- Innovative teaching, including new curriculum development, technology use, novel curriculum and changes to model or delivery method.
- The types of courses and course load of each faculty member (e.g., class size, difficulty and level of classes).
- Impressive teaching evaluation scores.
- Positive comments from the student feedback forms.
- Supporting rationale provided with students’ nominations.
- MIS Awards Coordinator may also request selected instructors to provide any additional information that can potentially support their case.
Faculty Teaching Award (part-time)
Recognizes outstanding teaching in the prior year (e.g., the award given at the 2020 ceremony is for courses taught during the 2019 calendar year). (Criteria updated 1/2020)
Eligibility
Part-time faculty of the Management Information Systems department who taught two or more courses in the previous calendar year (summer courses included) and met the departmental teaching rigor requirement.
Selection Process
Same process as for the full-time Faculty Teaching Award mentioned above.
AIS Officer of the Year Award
This award is given annually to high performing AIS Officers.
Award selection process
- The MIS department chair and the AIS faculty advisor review the annual pre-report provided by AIS. They identify officers that had executed their duties well as described there. The chair and the advisor also considered which officers have shown initiative and leadership. The advisor then provides two nominations to the MIS Awards committee, with a justification for each.
- The nominations then discussed and voted upon by a committee led by the MIS Awards coordinator. The committee is comprised of student, alumni, faculty, administrative, and administration representatives including multiple past Fox IT Award winners, and the department chair.
AIS Member of the Year Award
This award is given annually to high performing students who have been active in AIS.
Award selection process
- The AIS Faculty advisor reviews the attendance data from last semester. AIS members with strong activity in multiple areas (Speaker Series, Professional Development Workshops, TDAP Workshops, Community Service and/or Social events) are highlighted.
- The AIS officers reviews the member list provided by the advisor and makes one primary nomination, and at least one alternate nomination.
- The nominations are discussed and voted upon by a committee led by the MIS Awards coordinator. The committee is comprised of student, alumni, faculty, administrative, and administration representatives including multiple past Fox IT Award winners, and the department chair.
