In 3506, we’ve spent time working with a client, gathering requirements and ultimately providing a solution to the client that we hope meets their needs. Delivering the solution contains two parts – the Justinmind prototype and the accompanying documentation. For this assignment, should you choose to accept it, you should focus on a process at a former job that may not have been as efficient as possible or you feel could have been done better. Take that process and break it down step by step (analysis). Then, using the tools we’ve discussed in class, create a prototype in Justinmind that will improve the efficiency of the process (design).

Capstone projects focus on analytics, matching, procurement, biometrics, and contact management
MIS seniors presented final projects at the Fall 2017 Capstone Project Showcase. The showcase featured ten teams of seniors who presented projects on everything from automated grocery store checkout to a better way to find events in the area.
The winning team, which was selected by a panel of industry experts and Temple faculty, designed a platform for engineers to procure and track equipment for universities and makerspaces. The platform uses digital forms and cloud technology to procure lab equipment transparently. Mentored by Chris Cera, CEO of Arcweb Technologies, the Sandbox team of Shawn Niederriter, Ed Lahm, Zach Trona, and Ken Fong received a $500 prize.

PRO accelerates student professional development

MIS announces the successful rollout of version 4 of the Community platform professional achievement program. Since 2008, the program continues to break new ground in creating a structured measurable process for student professional development that provides recognition, external and internal branding, and opportunities for high achievers. The program pioneered at Fox MIS has been licensed at other universities, while portions have been copied by others.
Changes in version 4 include:
- New e-portfolio design with interactive customizable widgets that highlight professional achievement and a verified badge
- New Dashboard analytics to manage graduation requirements and comparison with peers
- New much simpler PRO point submission, review, and management process
- More PRO point earning opportunities (e.g., study abroad)
- New calendar to locate PRO point earning opportunities
- More curriculum checkpoints for on-time graduation
- New PRO site that integrates all the information related to the program

According to Dr. Munir Mandviwalla who is working on the project with Assistant Director Manoj Chacko and Assistant Professor Laurel Miller:
PRO provides the structure for professional development. The goal is for students to get good jobs; so the e-portfolio badge summarizes professional achievement, the points widget lists the activities, while the posts show how each activity influences professional development. Finally, PRO points measure activities so that students can get started early and stay on track using analytics available on an integrative Dashboard.
As part of the above roll out, the overall MIS Community site was updated with new content, a new mobile responsive look and feel, including the new Community activity widget. The e-portfolios of faculty, staff, and Master’s students also have a new mobile responsive look and feel with capabilities that integrate with the main site (e.g., research news).
From Bridge Repair to Elderly Patient Care, MIS seniors debut innovative solutions in capstone projects
After years of hard work and study, MIS seniors always have a lot to show off at the Fox School of Business Management Information Systems Capstone Project Showcase. The most recent Showcase, held at the end of April, was no exception: The 17 teams of seniors that gathered to present their final projects unveiled everything from a medical app designed to help doctors track elderly patients’ health regimens to a personalized news aggregation service to an improved search function on Temple’s course database.
The MIS Showcase is a unique opportunity for students to combine all of what they have learned in class with their own entrepreneurial skills, says Fox IT Advisory Board Chairman Bruce Fadem, who oversees the Mentoring program for IBIT. “This year’s teams showcased a wide range of exciting ideas and demonstrated the value of their education with professional business plans and excellent presentations.”
The winning team, selected by a panel of judges, designed an app that tackles the problem of evaluating the maintenance needs of bridges. “On average,” the team notes, “it takes an expert three to six weeks to properly assess a bridge’s structural needs and report these findings to the local government.” Their solution, the app they call Floating Bridges, combines 3D mapping drones, bridge-assessment algorithms and augmented reality to provide local governments with a more efficient, less expensive way to survey and prioritize problem bridges “on a yearly or even monthly basis.”
The team, which included Alexandra Iacovetti, Nicholas Rivera, Bridget Silk and Benjamin Sulaiman, won $500 for coming in first place — though the entire Capstone process has been rewarding in itself, Silk says. “We really benefited from bouncing ideas off each other,” she adds. “It was an awesome experience to end the year with.”
The Capstone projects are often cited by students as one of the highlights of the MIS experience. The opportunity to put so many skills and practices to the test (not to mention the chance to flex their creative muscles) in a competitive setting is both fun and helpful in terms of prepping for life outside of the Fox School.
“The project created an opportunity to fully develop and pitch a real, live platform that addresses a problem,” says Kate Morrison, whose team, District One Sports, created a one-stop digital resource for high school sports stats. “Going through this process end to end created more passion, teamwork and ownership than any other group project I’ve worked on, and it was a beneficial transition from the teaching/learning environment into the professional workplace.”

Facebook CIO Atish Banerjea (’91) honored by AIS
The Association for Information Systems honored Atish Banerjea, Chief Information Officer, Facebook, and Fox School ’91 alum, with the inaugural Association for Information Systems Leadership Excellence Award on December 12, 2016 at the 37th Annual International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS). Banerjea also delivered the keynote address at the conference while accepting the award.
Banerjea was recognized for his distinguished leadership and innovation in the use and development of information systems. Renowned for his extensive experience in adapting to succeed in the rapidly-changing technology landscape, his new role puts him in charge of Facebook’s global IT functions.
“Atish is at the forefront of the ongoing digital revolution that is transforming both business and higher education,” said AIS President, Jason Thatcher. “He is a fantastic role model for IS students and his success in digital transformation resonates with the research focus of much of the IS academic community.”
Banerjea has previously served as Executive Vice President and CIO for NBCUniversal where he leveraged digital technologies to drive change, constructing a networked infrastructure that positioned IT as a partner capable of substantively contributing to the company’s strategic aims.
Banerjea also served as the Chief Technology Officer and Senior Vice President of Dex One Corporation, where he led a major redesign of that company’s IT functions, helping to transform Dex One from a print-centric business to a digital media marketing company. Prior to that, Mr. Banerjea served as Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for Pearson, where he was responsible for the global planning and management of IT. He currently serves on the boards of directors for Hibu, Inc, a digital marketing firm, and Nelson Education, Canada’s leading educational publisher, and is also a member of the Fox IT advisory board at Temple University.
Professors Martin and Sclarow join the MIS department
Assistant Professor of Practice, Marie-Christine Martin and Assistant Professor of Practice, Steven E. Sclarow joined the Fox School’s Department of Management Information Systems in January 2017.
Prior to Temple, Professor Martin was a Technology and Services executive with 20+ years of experience working at three of the largest global IT providers, while Professor Sclarow, has 20+ years of experience in the Architectural Design and Construction Industry.
GenEd Data Science Course Scores National Award
David Schuff’s Data Science course has not only helped students pinpoint prime scoring positions for the Owls basketball team and identify Al Qaeda’s recruitment hot spots, it has also recently garnered national attention at the 4th Annual Business Intelligence Congress. At the conference, Schuff won the Teradata University Network Innovation in Teaching Award for his paper outlining the course, “Data Science for All: A University-Wide Course in Data Literacy,” in recognition for its innovative course design and unique place in Temple’s general education curriculum.
“This award validates the idea that analytics should be taught to a very broad audience,” said Schuff, Ph.D., professor of Management Information Systems.
Offering Data Science as a gen ed is ahead of the curve, Schuff added, as many universities are only beginning to launch graduate programs in data analytics and have no undergraduate courses.
The course equips students to harness the power of big data and to present data-driven arguments in a compelling manner, through a combination of theory and hands-on learning activities, including lessons on widely available software, such as Tableau and Excel. By the end of the course, students should be comfortable working with and presenting data as well as evaluating its trustworthiness.
“We are basically surrounded by data and our lives are infused by it,” Schuff said. “This course can make you more savvy about the way you navigate the world.”
For Alexander Monsell ’15, a recent graduate of Temple’s theater program, the course helped him to articulate arguments with more certainty.
“It’s…helpful in an industry where so much is based on feeling and emotional response to be able to back things up with hard numbers,” Monsell said. “‘The audience seemed to like the piece’ just isn’t as powerful as ‘90 percent of showings had standing ovations.’”
The course has grown in popularity over the years, with 240 students enrolled in spring 2016 compared to 30 students when the course launched in fall 2015.
After enrolling, Charlotte Myer, a Sophomore majoring in Political Science, saw how data science could apply to her undergraduate research.
“It’s an excellent primer for any kind of data-driven field,” she said. “It helps make the quantifiable more understandable.”

Temple’s AIS Student Chapter wins 1st again – for 4th consecutive year!
Temple’s AIS Student Chapter won big again at the Sixth Annual AIS Student Leadership Conference and Competition receiving first and second place. These victories mark four straight years of Temple’s clinching a first-place at the AIS conference – further affirming a remarkable year for the chapter, which was recently named Distinguished Chapter by the Association for Information Systems (AIS).
Held over April 9-11, 2015, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and hosted by the University of Alabama, the AIS conference hosted about 300 participants from schools around the globe, whose student teams had the opportunity to enter into various competition tracks. Fox MIS students competed in the IS that serves society track.

Designed to create transparency between Law Enforcement and Society. Incorporates Google Glass to live stream video and data to the dispatcher, while storing the information in a Cloud database. A real-time “second set of eyes” promotes greater safety and informed decision making for police officers in the field, and will significantly enhance both officer accountability and evidence gathering.
The AIS conference’s goal is to connect students, faculty, and corporate representatives, share best practices on operating and funding the chapter, and foster valuable (and competitive) information-system based activities. This year, as with previous years, Temple was more than up to the challenge.

Alum Ron Riddell ’68 endows 100K scholarship
When Ron Riddell graduated with a B.B.A. from Temple in 1968 computers were, he says, a “mystic temple in society.” But, armed with his degree, Riddell found himself in the computer field, and wound up, nearly 40 years later, with a successful career as a mainframe programmer. He’s currently a system support analyst and Assistant Vice President at Wells Fargo Bank.
Part of the achievement he attributes to luck, but “with out a degree at Temple I wouldn’t have gotten where I’m at…it opened doors to reasonable success.”
Now he’s helping other Temple students get their degrees, and have a chance at finding open doors, by funding the Ron and Ronda Riddell Endowed Scholarship with a $50,000 gift which is being matched by the Fox School for a total endowment of $100,000.
Munir Mandviwalla, Associate Professor and Chair, MIS, says the gift is “transformational because it will support hard working Temple students who choose business technology as a career. It is also the first such gift in the short history of the department.”
Riddell understands hard work and tight finance. He chose Temple because he could afford the tuition and live at home (commuting to class was common at the time). He got a further boost about two years into his studies. Temple became “state-related,” a designation that Pennsylvania gives universities that are independently run, but receive financial appropriations—in exchange for offering tuition discounts to students that are residents of Penn.
It was while he was at school that he met his future wife, Ronda Currens, although she didn’t attend Temple. The two met at church and she was only in Philly for a year before going home to Minneapolis. “ Four and a half years, and a lot of phone calls later,” the two married.
A job at Philco was Riddell’s first open door. After 18 months in production, he moved into programming. At the time, Philco was heavily involved in defense contracting, including work with NASA. His first computer was a Burroughs with 256 kilobytes. “I’ve got more memory sitting in my programmable alarm clock,” he points out.
The position at Philco lead to a stint at The Franklin Mint, then years of work at Combustion Engineering (a company who, at the time, was a leader in the development of both fossil and nuclear steam supply power systems.)
Then he took a job with Fidelity Bank and he’s now bee n in banking for 30 years.
“I didn’t build a better mousetrap. I got lucky getting a job in computers when demand was high.” Riddell says. He also invested, and lived a comfortable but modest life with Ronda (who succumbed to MS in 2009).
He wanted to do something that was large enough to make an impact, and the endowed fund does just that.
He also hopes that naming the scholarship after his wife, Ronda, will help people remember her. She was with him for 45 years.
Most importantly, though, “if it helps get a kid through college” then Riddell’s more than happy to have made sure doors continue to open.
Studying the evolution of digital artifacts with ‘big data’
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded a three-year grant totaling nearly $900,000 to trace human behaviors through big data. This marks the fourth NSF-awarded grant in the last five years that an interdisciplinary team of Temple faculty members has received to study the evolution of digital artifacts using large-scale digital trace data. The collaboration joins researchers from the Fox School’s Management Information Systems Department and College of Science and Technology (CST).
“When humans interact with digital systems, we leave a trace. Every call we make, every website we visit, it’s stamped with time and space information,” said Dr. Youngjin Yoo, the Harry A. Cochran Professor of Management Information Systems at the Fox School, and the research grant’s primary investigator. “What we do is constantly changing, and the trace data can act as DNA. What we focus on through this research is the repeat behaviors in humans that can be captured through digital trace data.
“Using those evolutionary patterns, we believe we can predict future behaviors of individuals and organizations. For example, by detecting the changes of commute patterns of individuals, we can predict overall public-transit systems’ performance in the future. Similarly, we want to be able to predict the changes in individual behaviors based on environmental changes.
Yoo said he and the grant’s co-principal investigators will study digitally enabled processes in complex digital systems, which “are like a living ecosystem, in that they constantly evolve,” he said. If patterns in the trace data represent what they call “behavioral genes,” Yoo said, alterations to those behavioral routines are “gene mutations.” Eventually, he said, the research team envisions developing software that will better predict the changes to those behavioral genes.
The benefits in doing so, according to Yoo, “are endless.” In a healthcare application, trace data could develop a pattern by which a patient sees a doctor or produce an average cost of care per patient. In an industry sense, such “gene mutations” could impact performance and cost.
“On the surface,” Yoo said, “all smart phones, for example, look the same. But everybody’s phone is different because of apps. It used to be that the product’s designer would make the product, and that was the end of the story. Now, it’s only the beginning. Millions of apps are downloaded. They’re changing constantly.
“Our argument is that, particularly in digital space, innovation never remains the same. It constantly changes and takes different forms.”
The research team includes: Yoo; Dr. Sunil Wattal, Associate Professor of Management Information Systems at the Fox School; Dr. Zoran Obradovic, Laura H. Carnell Professor of Data Analytics at CST; and Dr. Rob Kulathinal, Assistant Professor of Biology at the College of Science and Technology.
The NSF-awarded research grant runs through Jan. 31, 2018.
